Principal Jennifer Amoroso presented at the 2026 Autism New Jersey Conference in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on the examination of trauma-informed Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) practices through the implementation of Ukeru and mindset training to reduce the use of physical restraint in Approved Private Schools for Students with Disabilities (APSSDs) in New Jersey.
The six-month study examined the relationship between trauma-informed behavioral support practices, staff mindset, and restraint reduction in educational settings serving students with disabilities. The approach emphasized the importance of understanding the impact of trauma, promoting student dignity, and equipping staff with strategies that prioritize prevention, de-escalation, and supportive responses to challenging behaviors.
According to the reported findings, the six-month study demonstrated a 3.3% reduction in restraint. This finding highlights the potential value of integrating trauma-informed practices and staff training into schoolwide efforts to reduce restrictive interventions and strengthen student-centered behavioral support.
The presentation underscores the importance of continued evaluation of trauma-informed ABA practices, professional development, and organizational commitment to restraint reduction. By fostering a culture centered on safety, dignity, and positive behavioral support, Approved Private Schools may further advance practices that support the well-being of students and staff.
