Japanese Barberry is an exotic invasive that spreads to woodlands from properties where it has been planted as an ornamental. Covered with thorns, local animals and pollinators do not like it, and it crowds out the native plants they do like. You know who do like it? Ticks.
As part of our efforts to rid the Preserve of invasives, we recently removed dozens of Japanese Barberry bushes scattered throughout the woods and woody edgelands, from the roots up, making room for native plants to thrive and spread. Buh-bye!!
