Mount Holly Fire & Rescue is a municipal department staffed by both paid and volunteer personnel. The department serves a fourteen square mile district, which includes the City of Mount Holly as well as area in Gaston County. Mount Holly Fire Department was officially established on April 25, 1927. The first meeting consisted of seven charter members. During the first meeting the Constitution and

By-Laws were adopted courtesy of the Foamite Childs Corporation. On April 29, 1927 coats and boots were ordered. The first fire station in Mount Holly was located at City Hall. The first recorded fire for Mount Holly Fire Department was at JW Rilesys on March 16, 1928. The Catawba Heights Volunteer Fire Department was established in 1954 and provided fire protection to the Catawba Height community since 1958. After the City of Mount Holly annexed the entire Catawba Heights area in 1989, the City contracted with the Catawba Heights Fire Department for services until October of 2000. In October of 2000, the Catawba Heights Volunteer Fire Department merged with the Mount Holly Fire Department. On August 24, 1954 Mount Holly Life Saving Crew was established, and operated separately from the Fire Department. They provided all Emergency Medical and Rescue services to the City of Mount Holly, as well as to communities many miles beyond the city limits. In April of 2001, the Life Saving Crew merged with the Mount Holly Fire Department. After this merger Mount Holly Fire & Rescue was established.

Public Safety Announcement – Waterway Hazard

Due to ongoing drought conditions, water levels on Mountain Island Lake and Lake Wylie are significantly lower than normal. This creates serious hazards for boaters, especially after dark.

What to watch for:

- Submerged objects that are now just below the surface
- Shallow areas that are difficult to see
- Exposed rocks, stumps, and debris
- Changing channels and unexpected drop-offs

Nighttime boating is especially dangerous right now. Many of these hazards are not visible in low light, increasing the risk of grounding, damage, or injury.

Safety Tips:

- Avoid boating at night if possible
- Reduce speed and stay in marked channels
- Keep a proper lookout at all times
- Use depth finders and navigation aids
- Always wear a life jacket

Please use extra caution and help us keep everyone safe on the water.

Public Notice: Night Training at Tuckaseege Park

Tonight after dark, our department will be conducting training in and around Tuck Park. This exercise will involve the use of a drone as we work with new technology designed to help us locate incidents on the water in low-light and nighttime conditions.

You may notice drone activity and personnel in the area, but please know this is planned training and there is no cause for concern.

We appreciate your support as we continue to train and improve our ability to serve and protect our community day or night.

Due to increased wildfire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within those 100 feet.

Lakes, ponds, creeks, and pools are freezing over and they are not frozen enough to walk or play on. The New Hope Fire Department in Gaston County responded to a child who fell through the ice. Thankfully, the child was able to get out. Stay away from bodies of water.

We have already experienced heavy snowfall, and the snow is expected to continue through the evening. Please stay home unless travel is absolutely necessary. We have responded to several vehicle accidents today due to the snow.

We have adjusted our response operations. If you need us, we will respond, but expect longer response times due to road conditions. Temperatures will also drop significantly overnight, and we strongly encourage everyone to remain home unless absolutely necessary.

Road Update

Temperatures are rising, and melting is beginning on area roads. Main routes, including Hwy 273 and Hwy 27, are open. However, many secondary roads remain completely covered and will take time to thaw.

Later tonight, temperatures are expected to drop back below freezing, which will cause roads to refreeze and become icy again. Shaded areas will be especially slow to melt and may remain slick.

If you must travel, please use caution allow extra time, slow down, and be alert for changing road conditions.
