While most sphinx moths aren't rare, you might rarely see them because many species only fly at night or hide during the day, as this one was in our garden one recent morning. The more slowly you walk through our Nunan Butterfly Garden; the more that is revealed!

Welcoming a new native wildflower in our Nunan Butterfly Garden! New garden volunteer Tom Hewitt introduced narrowleaf yellowtops (Flaveria linearis) this summer and it is responding spectacularly, with prolific small yellow flowers that attract butterflies and skippers. Tom is a freelance writer living in Mount Dora and has written for the Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel, Florida Gardening magazine and others over the past 30 years. Tom will now contribute a Garden Musings column to lucky us now and then. Enjoy!

It's budget season for libraries across Florida and we wanted to take a minute to thank you for supporting the nonprofit organizations who underwrite so much of what we do here. Thanks to the Friends of the Library Mount Dora and the The Mount Dora Library Association, zero (that's $0) of our operating budget is spent on programs, book giveaways, door prizes, bookmarks, garden signs, lobby exhibits, refreshments, contest prizes, performers, lecturers, new furniture, archives acquisitions, artwork and yes, flowers at our help desks. Also helping us achieve that goal are the GFWC Mount Dora Woman's Club, the Kiwanis Club of Mount Dora and the Mount Dora Friends of the Environment. Thank you all so much for your tremendous commitment to our library!

The film H***y Tonk Freeway was released in the United States on August 21, 1981, making this year the 45th anniversary of the worldwide premiere. The motion picture was filmed in Mount Dora during the summer of 1980, directed by Academy Award winner John Schlesinger. This photograph showcases storefronts on the east side of Donnelly Street, between Fourth and Fifth Avenues, in the process of being painted pink for the filming. Film crews painted sections of Donnelly Street and installed additional false building facades to create the film set. The city of Mount Dora stood in for the fictional “Ticlaw”, a town desperate to attract tourist traffic after a new freeway bypasses them without an off-ramp.
