Mount Carmel Area Rescue Squad (Rescue 5)

The Mayor of Borough of Mt. Carmel is proclaiming Saturday March 14, 2026 as Mount Carmel Area Rescue Squad Day in honor of their “50th Anniversary”. As we look back to the year 1976, the United States is celebrating its 200th birthday, the movie “Jaws” hit the big screen and in the Mount Carmel Fire Department, an orange refurbished Bell Telephone utility truck then known as Squad 41 responded to its’ first emergency calls out of the West End Fire Company, located at 33 North Vine Street.
Today, it isheadquartered at Second and Walnut Streets and known as Mount Carmel Area Rescue Squad 5 They respond to fire calls, vehicle accidents and rescue operations. Started by a few dedicated volunteers who saw the need, obtained the first truck and began the transition to convert it into a rescue vehicle. Today an all-volunteer service who give of themselves for incidents at all times of the day or night, and train to save lives, protect property and learn how to use and maintain equipment such as jaws of life and rescue tools. Vehicles that they also respond with, include a heavy rescue, a quick response squad and a utility all terrain vehicle for off road situations.
Congratulations and many more years to your future in the region.

The Town Park was put on hold due to other priorities in the borough, but now we can move forward. This will also allow us to renovate the Tot-Lot on East 6th street and make plans for the vacant lot on South Oak St. Thanks to Ed Cuff and everyone who helped secure these grants.
I presented Keys to the Borough to outgoing Council President Bob Shirmer and Councilman Clem Plisiewicz, who have spent the last 16 years on council. As far back as I can remember, they served the borough on various boards and community involvement through other organizations. Their expertise as guided us through some major accomplishments and kept taxes low.

Mount Carmel Borough Reminds Residents That Saving Parking Spaces Is Prohibited

Mount Carmel Borough is reminding all residents that placing objects in the street to reserve or “save” parking spaces during periods of inclement weather is prohibited.

Public streets within the Borough are designated for public parking. Any items placed in the roadway, including chairs, cones, trash cans, or other objects used to block or reserve parking spaces, create safety hazards and interfere with street maintenance operations.

Borough officials advise residents that any such objects found in the street will be removed. This is enforced to ensure public safety, maintain access for emergency vehicles, and allow for efficient snow removal and street cleaning.

Residents are asked to cooperate by keeping all streets clear and accessible during inclement weather and at all times.
For additional information, residents may contact Mount Carmel Borough offices.

Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving.

I feel we are blessed in the local area, as so many people are giving and helping others, as times are tough with the budgets for the state and federal levels not being approved before November. People, on their own, are giving food and clothing to the needy. I see that other areas (local news) are doing the same. Thank you to all who helped in any way.

Council approved a tentative budget without a tax increase and should be voting on it in December.

LATS will be getting a Chrysler Pacifica through COSTARS program to help with transportation. Thank you to Jack Spade, LATS director, for the continued improvement to the transportation system.

Santa will be arriving in the Town Park on Wednesday, December 10th, at 6:30, sponsored by the Shamokin Rotary.

Revive and Thrive held a holiday event on South Oak St., with their first tree lighting. Ornaments were made and hung on the tree, and hot chocolate, cookies, and pizza were given out. A donation was given to the Food Bank. Santa and Mrs. Claus visited. Mt. Carmel Community Center held a Christmas at the Center. Hot chocolate and hot dogs were given out, and over 50 themed baskets were donated for everyone to take a chance on. Santa and Mrs. Claus visited with the children and gave a small gift. Light up Oak St. is scheduled for December 19th. Glowing necklaces will be handed out to everyone who attends the event. Bring your holiday spirit to Oak St. Enjoy the numerous trees and lights on display.

The fire department will es**rt Santa on Saturday, December 20th, through town.

Don’t forget Train Land is open every weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) until Christmas from 6:30 – 9 pm. It’s located on the second floor of the Clover Hose Co. at 6th and Oak Streets. It is open to the public free of charge.

On November 17, police and fire departments were dispatched to the 200 block of South Poplar for a fully involved structure fire that destroyed 7 homes and damaged numerous others. The quick response of the local units and the mutual aid from other communities throughout shows the dedication we have to our volunteer fire services. The people we call our auxiliary units walked around and provided us with the drinks and nourishment so we could do our jobs. Many people stepped up to help in many ways, and we are very grateful to you all. To all the local vendors who donated the food, drinks, donuts, cookies, sandwiches etc., you are not forgotten. Just to keep you informed, a fuel truck had to deliver fuel to the scene, for our fire trucks, so we could continue to fight this stubborn fire (13 hours). Thank you all for being there and supporting us. Great job protecting us. Stay Safe.

During Fire Prevention Week the fire department went to the local schools and day cares to give fire prevention talks and demonstrations. Thank You to all the volunteers who gave of their time to do this. Again, what a great bunch of volunteers we have in our local area.
Great job protecting us. Stay Safe.

With elections a few weeks away (November 4) there seems to be a little mud flinging or misleading comments. I can try and set the record straight. I will start with the Town Park, the money we had for making repairs and fixing it up was re-allocated to fixing the elevator in the borough hall. The elevator project went over budget mainly due to covid. The reason the money went there, is before we could move forward with anything with the building, we had to have handicapped accessibility to the upper floors by statecodes (laws). We do have money dedicated to the Town Park as of this writing. We applied for more grants which we were hoping for answers by mid-September, but because the state did not pass the budget, we still don’t have an answer and I am hearing maybe mid-November. Plans are to renovate the gazebo, up-date the electrical system, which the main panel is under the gazebo and redo the landscaping and trees. If we get this new grant, we will not only be able to do work on the Town Park but also the 6th street Tot Lot and also the Oak St. lot (old borough hall). If we do any work to the Town Park; engineering or construction we are no longer eligible for these other grants and again it will put us behind in making other things happen. As for decorating the Town Park I hear a lot of talkers but when it comes time to do it, it is the same people every year and I am very grateful to all who help.
When it comes to patrolling the park, I get complaints from people about why do the police drive thru the park or sit there to patrol Market St. When there is an event there why aren’t they patrolling other parts of town instead of hanging out there. Having a police presence at any event is beneficial. People have been arrested and had to make restitution for damages to the gazebo and parks, and it is not just kids.

People parking in yellow zones are being ticketed and we have painted more streets this year than in the past. Take a ride or walk around town and you’ll see it. Yes, we are working on an updated parking ordinance as well as code and sanitary water runoff.
As for impounding vehicles, this is dictated by our storage area (holds about a dozen vehicles) since we need a place to store them, the process of the laws and vehicle code which may take several months from the time it is ticketed till we can properly dispose of them. Over the past 2 years, several hundred vehicles are off our streets.
We own our borough hall and police station (paid for). We have a new borough garage and some new equipment to better serve the citizens with cleaning and plowing our streets.
The light poles on the viaduct look great and this has been something the borough and Evan’s Painting starting working on a few years ago.
Council meetings are open to the public and you can come and see for yourself or ask questions instead of hiding behind face book. Most of you people making comments have never been to a meeting or if you have it has been a long while.
Council meetings are the 3rd Thursday of the month with the work shop the Monday prior at 7 pm at borough hall.
