Today is going to be a high heat day!

🌡️ HIGH HEAT SAFETY REMINDER 🌡️
Hot weather can become dangerous quickly, especially for children, older adults, and pets.

As temperatures rise, remember to:
- Drink plenty of water
- Limit time outdoors during peak heat
- Take frequent breaks in air-conditioned or shaded areas
- Check on elderly family members, friends, and neighbors
- Never leave children unattended in a vehicle
- Make sure pets have access to shade and fresh water

Heat-related illnesses can develop rapidly and become life-threatening. If someone shows signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, move them to a cool location, provide water if appropriate, and call 911 if symptoms are severe.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and look out for one another.

🚑 Unit 7 Officially Placed in Service 🚑

Surry County EMS recently placed our new Unit 7 in service through a push-in celebration.

This tradition dates back to the 17th century, when crews would have to detach the horses from the fire engines and manually push equipment back into the station after returning from a call. Today, it serves as a reminder of our past while honoring our present.

We are proud and thankful to be able to place this new ambulance into service.

Surry County EMS has been selected to receive funding through the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ Rural Health Transformation Program. As part of a statewide $10 million investment awarded to 39 EMS agencies, the funding will help strengthen the EMS workforce and expand behavioral health and substance use disorder services in rural communities.

The award will support and expand Surry County EMS’s Mobile Integrated Health and Community Paramedic programs by addressing rural healthcare challenges such as behavioral health response, care coordination, substance use recovery, and improved access to healthcare services throughout Surry County.

We are grateful for the support of the Surry County Board of Commissioners and County Administration throughout this process. Their willingness to support our vision and pursue opportunities such as this allows us to continue strengthening our workforce, expanding services, and improving healthcare access for the citizens of Surry County.

We also appreciate the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services, NCDHHS, and our healthcare partners for their investment in rural EMS and their commitment to improving outcomes for the communities we serve.

North Carolina is investing $10 million to help EMS agencies expand access to care in rural communities.

Through Mobile Integrated Health programs, EMS teams can do more than respond to emergencies. These investments will help connect people to mental health services, substance use treatment, recovery support and follow-up care after an overdose.

By strengthening the EMS workforce and expanding community-based care, North Carolina is helping more people get the support they need closer to home.

Please use caution traveling through this area tonight. We ask for patience and allow time for drivers to enter and exit.

On Friday, due to heavy traffic, please avoid the area if you do not have to be there. Traffic control officers and measures will be in place to assist drivers.

Thank you for helping us provide time and space for Deputy Logan Utt's friends and family.

Our prayers are with you

Please join us in praying for the Surry County Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center family. Today, we suffered the loss of one of our own, Detention Officer Thomas James Smith III.

Please keep his family, friends, fellow shift members, and co-workers in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. We ask for God’s comfort, strength, and peace to surround all those affected by this tragic loss.

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18

Rest easy, my friend. Your service, dedication, and friendship will not be forgotten. We will take it from here.
