Little Free Library - Chase Crossingham Memorial

Little Free Library - Chase Crossingham Memorial Little Free Library's mission is to promote a love of reading worldwide. Mount Airy will welcome two little libraries in honor of Chase Crossingham.

Chase Crossingham was unique in the way he shared his literary enthusiasm with anyone that showed an interest. He was quick to introduce new acquaintances to authors that had captured his attention. It was not unusual after a conversation with Chase to receive a book in the mail. An attentive listener, Chase's gifts invariably aligned with your interests, but he also delighted in expanding your ho

rizons. Lorrie Moore and William Vollmann were some of his favorites to recommend because their stories were intellectually vigorous and unexpected. His passion was fiction and he reveled in works that evoked deep contemplation with surprisingly beautiful prose . He worshiped greats such as John Updike and had a particular affection for the works of Cormac McCarthy. Chase's lifelong acquisitions culminated in a wide-ranging collection of books and a personal library of thousands. A portion of these books will go to stock the Mt. Airy little libraries that are being erected in his memory. There is no greater honor that anyone can bestow on Chase than to read a book that he cherished and continue where he pointed us all...on a literary journey.

We think books meet the bar!

And if you liked ‘The Overstory’, don’t miss Powers' forthcoming novel 'Playground', longlisted for the 2024 Booker Prize and available on 9/24.

“What you make from a tree should be at least as miraculous as what you cut down.” – Richard Powers, ‘The Overstory’

“For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet or excite you.”

From ‘Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life’ by Anne Lamott

Thinking of Chase today. 🤍

“And it was then he spoke about the broken Link - and about the greatest books in the world - that in all their different ways, they were only saying over and over again one thing thousands of times. Just this thing - 'Hate not, Fear not, Love.' And he said that was Order.
And when it was disturbed, suffering came - poverty and misery and catastrophe and wars.”
