Training put into action! 🚑💚

Mount Airy Rescue Squad members Kayla Johnson and Jami Eldridge were hard at work tonight, putting their training and skills to use when they were needed most.

We are incredibly proud of their willingness to serve our community and be there when the call comes.

A special thank you to Jeff Hinshaw for providing the excellent Sports Injury Training that is required of our members before they are permitted to work sports standbys. Tonight was another reminder of exactly why we require this training and why preparation matters.

Most importantly, our thoughts and prayers are with the injured player and their family. We are praying for a speedy and complete recovery. 🙏💚

Update: The player has received clear initial tests and is home. The family has expressed their appreciation for the many prayers and support.

🚨COMMUNITY SERVING COMMUNITY!🚨

During the recent flooding, our pickup trucks were right in the middle of the response, helping our crews perform multiple rescues and get people out of dangerous situations. Flood water made its way inside the trucks as water-soaked rescuers and victims were moved in and out throughout the night. And flood water isn't just muddy water. It can contain fuel, sewage, dirt, chemicals, bacteria, and plenty of other grime that you definitely don't want hanging around inside a vehicle.

Once the water went down and the rescues were over, we knew our trucks needed much more than a regular cleaning. We reached out to Top Gun Automotive Detailing L.L.C, a longtime supporter of our department and our community, and they absolutely knocked it out of the park! They thoroughly cleaned, detailed, and sanitized both trucks, removing the remnants of the flood and making them look brand new again. More importantly, their work helps protect our vehicles for the long haul and provides a clean, safe environment for the rescuers who depend on them.

This is what community serving community is all about. A local business using its talents to take care of the people and equipment that take care of our community. We can't thank Jarred Jenkins at Top Gun enough for always supporting the Mount Airy Rescue Squad and the community we all call home. ❤️

🪨WE ROCKED RIVERSIDE TONIGHT!🪨

Tonight, our members traded rescue tools for shovels, buckets, hoses, and a whole lot of elbow grease as we joined more than 100 fellow community members, civic organizations, Scout troops, and city and county leaders for the Riverside Park Rock Party! And yes…we really took this cleanup for granite.😂🪨

More than 18 Rescue Squad members, 7 Auxiliary members, and 2 Board members showed up tonight to help Riverside Park recover from the Great Flood of 2026. Our crew jumped in alongside City Manager Darren Lewis, shoveling mud and silt out of the bathrooms and storage areas before giving everything a good hose-down. Hopefully we made things a little easier for our friends at Johnson's Xtreme Softwash when they come in to finish the job!

But tonight was about much more than picking up rocks and shoveling mud. This is what community looks like. These parks belong to all of us. Our families, our kids, our neighbors, and visitors enjoy them every day. We are volunteers. We don't receive a paycheck for showing up. We show up because this is OUR community, and each of us has the ability to make a difference in it.

That is what makes our team so special. When the floodwaters rose, our members showed up to help rescue our community. When the water went down and the cleanup began, they showed up again. We simply couldn't ask for a better group of people.

And speaking of an incredible team, a HUGE shoutout to our Auxiliary members! After everyone finished a long evening of hard work, they had a delicious supper waiting for us back at the station. They take care of the people who take care of our community, and we appreciate them more than they know!

This is the Mount Airy Rescue Squad. We show up when our community needs us. During the storm. After the storm. And throughout the rebuilding. Mount Airy will rebuild, recover, and come back stronger, because that's what this community does. We take care of each other.

Last night will be remembered as one of the most challenging nights in our community's history.

As historic floodwaters swept across Mount Airy, the worst since September 1979, the men and women of the Mount Airy Rescue Squad answered the call without hesitation. While most of our community was sleeping, our members spent the entire night responding to emergencies, conducting at least 7 water rescues and 1 low-angle rescue. We rescued motorists trapped in floodwaters hidden by darkness and heavy rain, and we rescued residents from their homes as rising water caught them by surprise.

The devastation we witnessed is difficult to put into words. Our thoughts are especially with the The City of Mount Airy, NC, whose Public Works Department suffered catastrophic losses and damages to its offices, equipment, and fleet. The Mount Airy Police Department and Mount Airy Fire Department also experienced losses/severe damages to vehicles securely stored at the City maintenance facility. These agencies provide essential services to our community every day, and they have a long road to recovery ahead.

I want to personally thank Assistant Chief Nathan Webb, Lieutenant Willis Gunter, Sergeant Kathryn Freed, Dan Speight, Kayla Johnson, Luke Roberts, Madison Williams, Derrick Miles, and Laken Riddle for answering the call(s) without hesitation and serving our community all night long, until the sun came up and beyond. Your dedication, professionalism, and selfless service make me incredibly proud to serve alongside you.

A heartfelt thank you also goes to Dobson Rescue Squad and Pilot Mountain Rescue and EMS. When our resources became stretched, they immediately responded with personnel and rescue boats. We often say we are a resource for the communities around us, and last night they proved they are an invaluable resource for ours. That is what mutual aid is all about.

Throughout the incident, our agency deployed all 3 of our rescue boats, both quick response vehicles, our Heavy Rescue, and every other available applicable resource. Despite the flooding, our crews also responded to and completed a low-angle rescue from a motor vehicle collision. We had no injuries and no fatalities for our teams or the community we helped, thankfully!

As our community begins to recover, please keep Mount Airy in your thoughts and prayers. Pray for our city employees, public works crews, first responders, utility workers, business owners, and every family impacted by this historic storm. They are working tirelessly to restore our community while recovering from losses of their own. Please be patient with them and support them however you can.

I feel confident there will be opportunities in the coming days to help with cleanup and recovery. When those opportunities arise, I encourage everyone who is able to lend a hand.

Mount Airy has always been resilient. We will rebuild. We will recover. We will come back stronger than ever because that is who we are.

We are community, and we take care of our community. Please continue to keep Mount Airy in your thoughts and prayers.

🐄☀️ THE END OF SUMMER COW-NT DOWN! ☀️🐄

Udderly good food, great people, and a whole lot of fun! 😂
We had a great evening celebrating the end of summer with our Mount Airy Rescue Squad family! Our members, Board members, Auxiliary members, and their families came together for some much-needed food, fellowship, laughs, and time away from the emergency calls.

A HUGE thank you to our Program Committee and Building & Grounds Committee for pulling everything together and making the evening a success! And we have to give a special shoutout to Tim Eldridge and Lance Earley, who endured the heat and manned the grill to keep the herd fed! 🔥🍔🌭 You guys were definitely the real MOO-VPs of the evening! 🐄😂

We spend a lot of time serving our community, but nights like this give us a chance to enjoy the people and families who make that service possible.

First responders spend their careers showing up for others. Sometimes, we need to make sure we’re showing up for each other, too.

Mount Airy Rescue Squad is proud to host The Naked Firefighter Program, a mental health and wellness program designed specifically for those who serve in public safety.

Fire, EMS, rescue, law enforcement, communications, and other public safety professionals see and experience things most people never will. This program is about having real conversations, recognizing when we or someone beside us may be struggling, breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health, and connecting responders with resources that can help.

Join us Monday, October 19 at 6:00 PM at the Mount Airy Rescue Squad.

This class is open to our public safety partners throughout the area. Whether you’ve been serving for 30 years or just started, taking care of the person behind the uniform is just as important as taking care of everyone else.

🚒🤝 Strong partnerships build stronger communities.

The days of emergency services operating within invisible jurisdictional lines are long gone. Today’s emergencies demand teamwork, and tonight was another great example of what that looks like.

Members of the Mount Airy Rescue Squad had the opportunity to train alongside our friends at Cana Volunteer Fire Dept during a demonstration of their new rescue tools. We appreciate their hospitality and the opportunity to strengthen a partnership that continues to grow through mutual aid and a shared commitment to serving our communities.

As a certified Heavy Rescue agency, Mount Airy Rescue Squad is proud to provide specialized rescue capabilities to our neighboring departments when needed. Through our partnership with Cana Fire Department, we’ve had the opportunity to assist on Interstate 77 and within their response district, while Cana is there to support us on the northern end of ours. By training together and working together, we’re building a stronger response that benefits everyone we serve.

The evening wasn’t just about watching new equipment in action. We rolled up our sleeves and got hands-on with Cana’s new rescue tools in a highly controlled extrication training environment. Together, we explored what the equipment could do, practiced different extrication techniques, and exchanged ideas and experiences. Every opportunity to train together makes us more prepared for the day someone is depending on us to save a life.

🇺🇸 Happy 250th Birthday, America! 🇺🇸

What an incredible Independence Day for our community!

Our volunteers started the morning helping with the July 4th Parade, answered several emergency calls throughout the day, and finished the evening keeping traffic moving safely after the fireworks. It was a long day, but serving our neighbors on one of America’s most special days is exactly why we do what we do.

There’s something special about seeing our community come together to celebrate our nation’s freedom. We are proud to play a small part in helping make those memories happen safely.

Now… can we all agree it was about 147 degrees outside? 🥵 If you saw one of our members melting into the pavement, don’t worry… we made it!

Thank you to everyone who waved, smiled, and showed their support throughout the day. We are blessed to serve such an amazing community.

Here’s to 250 years of freedom, service, and hometown pride.
