🔥 TONIGHT AT MOUNT AIRY RESCUE SQUAD 🔥

We’re proud to host The Naked Firefighter, a mental health and wellness class designed specifically for those who serve others.

And no, “getting naked” isn’t what you think. 😂

It means taking off the armor and masks we wear every day. It’s about looking honestly at ourselves and recognizing how years of experiences, beliefs, stress, trauma, and the culture of public safety can shape the way we think, react, and live.

Before we can make meaningful changes, we have to be willing to see ourselves clearly: real, raw, and uncut.

Mount Airy Rescue Squad is proud to announce that Representative Dan Kiger secured $50,000 in funding through the North Carolina General Assembly for capital improvements and new signage at our station. Representative Kiger recently joined us at the squad building to officially present the funding to our members.

For a 501(c)(3) nonprofit operating on a strict budget, $50,000 is a monumental investment in our organization. Funding of this magnitude gives us an opportunity to complete much-needed facility improvements that would otherwise take years to accomplish while allowing our regular operating funds to remain focused on emergency response, equipment, training, and serving our community. This grant is specifically designated for capital improvements and signage and is separate from the donations that support our everyday operations. We continue to depend on the generosity of our community, and every donation remains incredibly important to our mission.

We are extremely grateful to Representative Kiger for recognizing the needs of local emergency responders and for supporting the people who dedicate their time to serving others. We sincerely thank Representative Kiger and the North Carolina General Assembly for making this investment in Mount Airy Rescue Squad and, ultimately, the community we proudly serve.

🍂 The 60th Autumn Leaves Festival is officially in the books!

For more than 50 years, Mount Airy Rescue Squad has been proud to play a part in making this festival happen. From setting up downtown before the crowds arrive, to providing medical coverage alongside our sister agencies throughout the weekend, to tearing it all back down Sunday evening, the Autumn Leaves Festival has become a tradition for our squad just as much as it has for our community.

Around here, festival week has earned the nickname “Hell Week,” and anybody who has worked it knows exactly why! 😂 It means long days, late nights, sore feet, heavy lifting, and very little downtime, all while our members continue answering the everyday calls for service that don’t stop just because festival week is here. But year after year, our members show up. And that deserves more than just a quick thank you.

To every member of Mount Airy Rescue Squad who gave up evenings, days off, weekends, and time with family to make this week happen, THANK YOU! Some worked behind the scenes where nobody saw them. Some spent hours setting up and tearing down. Some staffed medical coverage throughout the festival. Some kept our regular operations moving while others were downtown. Many did a little bit of everything.

Every division of this organization stepped up. Our operational members, Auxiliary, Board of Directors, and everyone who lent a hand worked together as one team. Nobody does it for recognition. They do it because this is our town, these are our neighbors, and serving this community is what Mount Airy Rescue Squad has done for generations.

That’s what makes this festival so special to us. It gives us a chance to see familiar faces, meet new ones, work alongside our fellow public safety agencies, and welcome thousands of visitors to the community we’re proud to call home.

A huge thank you to the Greater Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce for another outstanding festival and for the tremendous amount of work it takes to make an event of this size happen.

And to our members, we see the hours, the effort, the sacrifice, and the pride you put into this week. Mount Airy Rescue Squad simply could not do it without you. We’re tired. We’re sore. We’re probably ready to never see another festival booth again. 😂 But ask us next year, and we’ll be right back out there. That’s what we do. 🍁🚑

Last week was a very special evening for the Mount Airy Rescue Squad as our members who responded during the historic August flooding were recognized by the City of Mount Airy Board of Commissioners for their lifesaving efforts. That night, our volunteers left their homes and families and answered the call to serve their community. In darkness, rapidly rising water, and extremely dangerous conditions, our crews responded to multiple water rescues and saved six people from situations where the outcomes could have been very different without their actions.

We are incredibly proud to recognize those who answered the call that night: Chief Corey Scearce, Assistant Chief Nathan Webb, Lieutenant Willis Gunter, Sergeant Kathryn Freed, Luke Roberts, Dan Speight, Kayla Johnson, Madison Williams, Derrick Miles, and Laken Riddle. The evening was made even more meaningful by having our families and members of our Board of Directors there with us, along with one of the individuals our crews rescued that night. Seeing someone standing with us whose life was directly impacted by the work of our volunteers was a powerful reminder of why we serve.

We were also honored by Senator Eddie Settle, who gifted Mount Airy Rescue Squad a $10,000 contribution from the state in recognition of our lifesaving efforts. We are sincerely grateful for his support and investment in our mission. While we deeply appreciate the recognition and praise our members received, none of them responded that night expecting anything in return. They saw their community in trouble, left their families behind, and went to work. We are proud of our people, thankful for the families who support them, grateful for our Board of Directors and community, and humbled by the privilege of serving Mount Airy and the surrounding area.

Training put into action! 🚑💚

Mount Airy Rescue Squad members Kayla Johnson and Jami Eldridge were hard at work tonight, putting their training and skills to use when they were needed most.

We are incredibly proud of their willingness to serve our community and be there when the call comes.

A special thank you to Jeff Hinshaw for providing the excellent Sports Injury Training that is required of our members before they are permitted to work sports standbys. Tonight was another reminder of exactly why we require this training and why preparation matters.

“You only have ONE chance to get it right!”

Most importantly, our thoughts and prayers are with the injured player and their family. We are praying for a speedy and complete recovery. 🙏💚

Great work, Kayla and Jami! This is what being prepared and serving your community is all about! 🚑💚

Update: The player has received clear initial tests and is home. The family has expressed their appreciation for the many prayers and support.

🚨COMMUNITY SERVING COMMUNITY!🚨

During the recent flooding, our pickup trucks were right in the middle of the response, helping our crews perform multiple rescues and get people out of dangerous situations. Flood water made its way inside the trucks as water-soaked rescuers and victims were moved in and out throughout the night. And flood water isn't just muddy water. It can contain fuel, sewage, dirt, chemicals, bacteria, and plenty of other grime that you definitely don't want hanging around inside a vehicle.

Once the water went down and the rescues were over, we knew our trucks needed much more than a regular cleaning. We reached out to Top Gun Automotive Detailing L.L.C, a longtime supporter of our department and our community, and they absolutely knocked it out of the park! They thoroughly cleaned, detailed, and sanitized both trucks, removing the remnants of the flood and making them look brand new again. More importantly, their work helps protect our vehicles for the long haul and provides a clean, safe environment for the rescuers who depend on them.

This is what community serving community is all about. A local business using its talents to take care of the people and equipment that take care of our community. We can't thank Jarred Jenkins at Top Gun enough for always supporting the Mount Airy Rescue Squad and the community we all call home. ❤️

🪨WE ROCKED RIVERSIDE TONIGHT!🪨

Tonight, our members traded rescue tools for shovels, buckets, hoses, and a whole lot of elbow grease as we joined more than 100 fellow community members, civic organizations, Scout troops, and city and county leaders for the Riverside Park Rock Party! And yes…we really took this cleanup for granite.😂🪨

More than 18 Rescue Squad members, 7 Auxiliary members, and 2 Board members showed up tonight to help Riverside Park recover from the Great Flood of 2026. Our crew jumped in alongside City Manager Darren Lewis, shoveling mud and silt out of the bathrooms and storage areas before giving everything a good hose-down. Hopefully we made things a little easier for our friends at Johnson's Xtreme Softwash when they come in to finish the job!

But tonight was about much more than picking up rocks and shoveling mud. This is what community looks like. These parks belong to all of us. Our families, our kids, our neighbors, and visitors enjoy them every day. We are volunteers. We don't receive a paycheck for showing up. We show up because this is OUR community, and each of us has the ability to make a difference in it.

That is what makes our team so special. When the floodwaters rose, our members showed up to help rescue our community. When the water went down and the cleanup began, they showed up again. We simply couldn't ask for a better group of people.

And speaking of an incredible team, a HUGE shoutout to our Auxiliary members! After everyone finished a long evening of hard work, they had a delicious supper waiting for us back at the station. They take care of the people who take care of our community, and we appreciate them more than they know!

This is the Mount Airy Rescue Squad. We show up when our community needs us. During the storm. After the storm. And throughout the rebuilding. Mount Airy will rebuild, recover, and come back stronger, because that's what this community does. We take care of each other.
