Recently, there have been two scam attempts circulating that appear to originate from the Marshall County Sheriff's Office main telephone number, (304) 843-1500.
In the first reported scam, the caller instructs the recipient to leave their home immediately. In the second scam, the caller informs the recipient that they must authenticate a signature on a court document.
These calls are fraudulent and are not being made by the Marshall County Sheriff's Office. Scammers are able to manipulate caller ID information, making it appear as though calls are coming from legitimate telephone numbers, including those belonging to law enforcement agencies.
The Marshall County Sheriff's Office will never contact individuals by telephone to demand immediate action, request payment, threaten arrest, or require personal information to resolve legal matters. If you receive a suspicious call claiming to be from the Sheriff's Office, do not provide any personal or financial information and do not follow any instructions given by the caller.
If you are unsure whether a call is legitimate, hang up and contact the Marshall County Sheriff's Office directly at (304) 843-1500 to verify the information. Residents who believe they have been the victim of a scam or have received one of these fraudulent calls are encouraged to report the incident to the Sheriff's Office.
We ask that members of the public remain vigilant and share this information with family, friends, and neighbors to help prevent others from becoming victims of these scams.
