Another meaningful piece of the Reflective Garden is blooming at Lawrence County Signature School!
We are incredibly proud to celebrate the completion of the Bernice Miller Hybridized Iris Raised Bed, made possible through the support of the Morgan County Master Gardener Grant, Morgan County and Lawrence County Master Gardeners, community volunteers, Lawrence County Signature School National Honor junior Evangeline Craig, and the always wonderful Ms. Audrey Woodruff.
Receiving this grant was such an honor for our school and our students. Out of many worthwhile projects, the Morgan County Master Gardeners chose to invest in our vision for hands-on horticultural education, conservation, and community learning. Their support helped transform an idea into a living classroom where students can explore science in a meaningful and lasting way.
What makes this project even more special is the story behind these irises. Bernice Miller was recognized for her work with the American Iris Society, and her hybridized irises represent years of dedication, patience, scientific knowledge, and care. These are not ordinary flowers. Hybridized irises are carefully cultivated and preserved through intentional pollination and propagation, making them both rare and deeply meaningful to the gardening world.
It is truly a privilege for our students to help preserve and grow a piece of that legacy right here in our Reflective Garden. Students will learn about plant genetics, pollination, seed preservation, conservation, and sustainable gardening while also understanding the importance of protecting and sharing unique plant varieties for future generations.
This raised bed represents so much more than gardening. It reflects collaboration, stewardship, hands-on learning, mentorship, and community pride. We are deeply thankful to everyone who donated time, resources, knowledge, encouragement, and hard work to make this project possible.
The Reflective Garden continues to grow into a space where science, history, learning, and heart bloom together... and we cannot wait to watch these irises, and our students, flourish.
