Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve

Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve The Grand Bay NERR is one of 30 reserves within the National Estuarine Research Reserve system.

The Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) is one of 28 reserves within the National Estuarine Research Reserve system and is located in extreme southeastern Mississippi in Jackson County near the small community of Pecan. The NERR is comprised of approximately 18,000 acres, found chiefly within the Grand Bay National Wildlife Refuge and the Grand Bay Savanna Coastal Preserve. This r

eserve contains a variety of wetland habitats, both tidal and non-tidal, such as pine savannas, salt marshes, saltpans, bays and bayous as well as terrestrial habitats that are unique to the coastal zone such as maritime forests. Healthy estuarine salt marshes and fire-maintained pine savannas are some of the most biodiverse habitats in North America, and the reserve is fortunate enough to contain considerable amounts of both. These habitats support many important species of fish and wildlife. Commercially and recreationally important species of finfish and shellfish such as brown shrimp, speckled trout and oysters abound here. Sea turtles, bottlenose dolphin and, on occasion, manatees can be found in the deeper waters of the reserve. Many species of carnivorous plants and orchids can be found in the higher savanna habitats.

Do you live on waterfront property in Harrison or Jackson county? Now's your chance to help an endangered species!

The Alabama Red-bellied Turtle is an endangered species which can only be found in four coastal counties of Mississippi and Alabama. The US Fish and Wildlife Service is looking to install small ramps on property containing seawalls to help provide these turtles with greater land access for possible nesting or basking behaviors. Priority areas include the lower West Pascagoula River and any of its tributaries/distributaries (Paige Bayou, Sioux Bayou, Mary Walker Bayou, Bluff Creek, Bayou Castelle) and Lower Escatawpa River. However, they’ll take any locations within the red areas on the map including East Pascagoula River, Biloxi River, Tchoutacabouffa River, Old Fort Bayou, Graveline Bayou, Bayou Bernard, or any of the tributaries of these locations. Please contact Luke Pearson at the provided email if you are interested in participating!

Purple martin gourds are now back up at the NERR! These migratory birds begin to arrive to our area in winter, before nesting in spring and later heading to South America. One of our staff members also serves as the Gulf Coast Phenology Trail coordinator, and as such, we have also established a new set of purple martin gourds at the Pascagoula River Audubon Center this winter. Be sure to visit one of these sites in the coming weeks and months to see these birds as they begin to nest!

It's the first freeze of the year at our Reserve, which means we have our first frost flowers of the year! Frost flowers are a winter phenomena caused as water inside of plants freezes and expands, causing fissures along the stem. The ice is then drawn out of the stem through capillary action, and as more and more water is drawn out of the stem it will curl into thin, feathery patterns which can sometimes resemble exotic flowers. At the Reserve this can most commonly be observed on some of our Eupatorium (thoroughwort) species, though it can be observed on some other flowering plants as well such as Pluchea (camphorweed).
