Latah County Clerk Addresses Election Procedures and Misinformation Ahead of May 19 Primary
Moscow, Idaho — During today’s Latah County Board of Commissioners meeting, Latah County Clerk Julie Fry provided an overview of the election plan for the upcoming May 19, 2026 Primary Election and addressed several concerns raised by community members.
The meeting was held in response to misinformation circulating about election procedures. Clerk Fry outlined four key issues and provided clarification to ensure voters have accurate
and reliable information.
Absentee Ballot Delivery -
Concerns were raised regarding absentee ballots sent to P.O. Box 8068. Clerk Fry confirmed that the P.O. Box remains fully operational and is checked daily. After direct communication with the U.S. Postal Service in Moscow, it was confirmed that all election mail is being delivered either to the Latah County Courthouse or the P.O. Box. On Election Day, USPS will hand-deliver all mail received that meets delivery deadlines.
Early Voting Timeline -
Questions were also raised about why early voting in Latah County does not begin on April 27, as referenced on the Idaho Secretary of State’s calendar. Clerk Fry clarified that recent legislation (HB278, passed March 2025) allows counties flexibility in setting early voting schedules within a defined window. Latah County has elected to maintain its traditional two-week early voting period. Current staffing levels, facility availability, and budget constraints do not support an additional week of early voting at this time.
New Early Voting Location -
Early voting will now take place at the Latah County Fairgrounds rather than the County Courthouse. This change is intended to improve voter access, provide more parking, and better accommodate higher voter turnout. The Fairgrounds will serve as the permanent early voting location moving forward.
Polling Location Changes for Select Precincts -
Precincts 1, 8, 13, 16, and 18 will no longer vote at the University of Idaho Kibbie Dome. These precincts have been relocated to the Bruce Pitman Center on the University of Idaho campus. The new location offers improved parking, easier access, and a quieter voting environment. Affected voters will receive mailed notification postcards with updated polling information.
Clerk Fry emphasized her commitment to conducting elections that are efficient, transparent, and cost-effective for Latah County residents. “Ensuring voters have accurate information is critical to maintaining trust in our election process,” said Fry. “I encourage anyone with questions to contact the Latah County Elections Department directly to avoid misinformation.”
