👮‍♀️ Deputy Spotlight: Detention Sergeant Tate 👮‍♀️

Continuing our National Police Women's Day celebration, we're honored to highlight Detention Sergeant Tate!

Sgt. Tate has served our department since 2018, bringing dedication and steady leadership to every role she's held. She currently serves as a hostage negotiator on the Crisis Negotiation Team — a role that demands calm under pressure, sharp instincts, and an unwavering commitment to protecting lives. She serves as a Field Training Officer, helping shape the next generation of detention deputies, and she's a certified Taser Instructor. Sgt. Tate also helps coordinate our court bailiffs and transport team, ensuring our operations run smoothly and safely both in and out of the courtroom.

Beyond her duties with us, Sgt. Tate volunteers her time as a Fire/EMT — giving even more of herself to the community she serves.

🏅 Awards & Recognition:
Sgt. Tate is the recipient of the Grand Cordon Award, presented for her critical role in a SWAT standoff in 2022.

When she's off duty, Sgt. Tate loves the outdoors — you'll likely find her hunting, fishing, or paddleboarding. She's also an avid reader, having made her way through over 100 books so far this year! And when it comes to caffeine, she doesn't discriminate — if it's caffeinated, she's drinking it. ☕

In honor of National Police Women's Day on September 12th, we're spending the week highlighting the incredible women who serve our community here at the Latah County Sheriff's Office. Kicking off our celebration, we're proud to introduce Corporal Miley!

Cpl. Miley began her career in law enforcement long before she pinned on a badge with us - serving 6 years as Military Police in the United States Marine Corps. She joined our department 9 years ago, starting out in the jail before working her way to the road as a Deputy, and has since earned her stripes as Corporal.

🏅 Awards & Recognition:
🔹 2021 – Life Saving Award, for performing CPR on a man suffering a heart attack and saving his life
🔹 2022 – Grand Cordon Award, for her critical role during a SWAT standoff
🔹 2022 – Meritorious Service Award, for her role as an off-duty first responder to a major vehicle collision, providing medical assistance to injured parties while awaiting medical personnel
🔹 2026 – Exceptional Service Award, for her role as the lead investigator on a severe animal abuse case, requiring significant time, energy, and commitment to ensuring justice was served

MISSING JUVENILE: PAYTON
Update: CCTV footage shows what clothes Payton was seen wearing today.

15-year-old Payton has been reported as a Missing Juvenile. Payton was last seen at about 11:00 PM on September 3rd, 2026, near Tomer Road, in Moscow, Idaho. Payton is believed to have left the area on foot.
Payton is described as 5’2”, and about 105 pounds. Payton has long black hair, and hazel eyes. Payton had a nose piercing. Payton was last seen wearing black and red “DC” brand shoes and all black clothing.

Whether it’s in the hallways or on the field, our SRO's are there to support our students. Last week, Deputy Paradis lent a hand with traffic control at the Troy Cross Country meet, cheering on athletes from Troy, Deary, and Potlatch. We’re proud of the relationships our SROs build and look forward to more opportunities to support our schools this year.

We had a great time at the 10th annual Police vs. Fire softball game this weekend! We played alongside City of Moscow Police Department against the Moscow Volunteer Fire & Ambulance. A big congrats to Moscow Volunteer Fire & Ambulance for the win this year!

We can't wait for a rematch next year 💪

The stop arm was out, the lights were flashing - and this driver kept going.
While this video is from last year, with kids back in school, bus safety matters more than ever.
Flashing red lights + extended stop arm = STOP, no matter which direction you're driving.
Drivers caught doing this will be cited. Slow down. Stop. Watch for kids.

Update: 9/8/26 The Fire Restrictions have been lifted. While campfires are no longer restricted, the public is encouraged to continue to use caution.
- Fires are only allowed in provided and designated fire rings and grills.
- Permitted fires must be kept under control at all times.
- Never leave a campfire unattended.
-Make sure it is completely extinguished before walking away.

LATAH COUNTY PARKS FIRE RESTRICTIONS IN EFFECT

Due to extreme fire danger, the following are now PROHIBITED at Robinson Park, Robert Edwin Lloyd Park, Phillips Farm Park, and Bateson-Hylton Park:

🚫🔥 Campfires & stove fires (Liquid Petroleum/Liquid Propane Gas stoves OK, in a cleared area only)
🚫🚬 Smoking outside vehicles or a cleared 3-ft area
🚫⚙️ Combustion engines & spark-generating equipment, 1PM–1AM

Update: All horses have been released to the custody of Horse & Halo. They worked very hard in conjunction with the Idaho Animal Rescue Network to make sure these horses found safe homes and the care they needed. A Message from The Horse and Halo:

14 DAYS.

We have until August 28th to rescue as many of the 65 horses recently seized and forfeited to the Latah County Sheriff’s Office as possible.

We are partnering with LCSO to find immediate, safe placement for these horses so their futures are no longer uncertain. We are incredibly grateful to the Sheriff’s Office for giving us the opportunity to do everything we can for this herd.
The horses are believed to be primarily Morgans. We spent time with them yesterday, and they are inquisitive, curious, and have wonderful dispositions. Since coming into care, they have gained weight and shown substantial improvement. We are also working to get preventative veterinary care on board as quickly as possible.

The herd currently includes approximately:
• 10 stallions
• 1 gelding
• 24 mares
• 23 foals

Exact ages and additional information are still being determined.
If you previously applied for a horse from the Westwinds Morgan case, we strongly encourage you to apply for one of these horses as well.

WE NEED HELP.

Fourteen days isn’t much time for 65 horses. But we have an opportunity to change what happens next for them, and we’re going to do everything we can with the time we’ve been given.
Please share. Especially with experienced horse homes, equine rescues, Morgan enthusiasts, and anyone with safe acreage who may be able to help.

UPDATE: August 11, 2026 at 3:30 PM
The gas leak has been capped by Avista and there is no longer any danger from the leak.

Please avoid the area of S Garfield and W Grant St in Genesee. There is an active gas leak. Genesee Fire Department is actively evacuating residences and Avista Utilities is enroute. We will put out more updates in appropriate.
