Researchers have quantified the economic good of prescribed burning.

A study in the journal Science analyzed U.S. Forest Service data from 285 wildfires that intersected with prescribed burning and other fuel treatments across 11 western states from 2017 to 2023 to measure how much damage was averted due to the treatments.

They found that prescribed burning, along with other forest fuel treatments, avoided the staggering costs of large and severe wildfires. Each dollar invested yielded $3.73 in expected benefits.

Starting tomorrow through May 4, travelers along Highway 95 to New Meadows may see some smoke due to the Meadows View prescribed burn. Specifically, smoke will be easily visible traveling south from New Meadows to mile post 171 on Highway 95. This is a planned burn to help reduce accumulation of hazardous fuels and wildfire risk.

Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests Begin Prescribed Fires

Favorable weather conditions in place for hazardous fuels reduction work

The Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest is tentatively planning prescribed fire operations in the coming days and weeks, pending all required approvals. We estimate this work to continue through next week at least as weather conditions allow. We use prescribed fires to help reduce overgrown vegetation to help protect local communities, infrastructure and natural resources from wildfires. The following prescribed fires are being implemented to remove and clear debris from previous timber harvest and prepare the units for tree planting in the near future

Spring prescribed fires planned for the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests include:

FanBit Timber Sale Rx - 70 acres located in Fan and Trout Creek drainages near FSR #5107.
Northside Powell Rx – 20 acres located in the Wendover Creek drainage north of FSR #5621.
Pino Blanco Rx – 40 acres located Northwest of Laird Park and Giant White Pine Campground and trailhead off of State Highway 6.
Crooked Christie Rx – 75 acres located 8 miles Southwest of Whitebird, ID West of US Highway 95.
Those areas may close to the public for several days for public safety. Watch for warning signs along roads near all prescribed fire areas before and during burns.

Residents may experience short-duration smoke impacts during these prescribed burns. Go to https://fire.airnow.gov/ to find more detailed information about air quality. When driving, slow down and turn on your headlights when you encounter smoke on the road.

We will evaluate weather conditions in the hours before a burn begins. If conditions warrant, scheduled prescribed fire activities may be canceled.

Stay informed about the scheduled prescribed fires through the forest website, social media channels, and InciWeb, the interagency incident information system. We will notify county emergency management officials when burning begins.
