As we head into the summer months, the Idaho Transportation Department’s Office of Highway Safety (OHS) reminds drivers to be proactive about their safety during the time of year with the highest number of fatal and serious injury crashes.
The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is traditionally known as the "100 Deadliest Days" because it has the highest volume of crashes. OHS is joining national partners to shift the narrative from the most dangerous time on the roads to the “100 Safest Days of Summer” to remind drivers to be more vigilant.

While today marks 19 years since the loss of Officer Lee Newbill, he will always be remembered for his selfless service to our department and our community.
Before joining MPD, Lee was a commissioned officer in the United States Army, where he served for 10 years before being honorably discharged in 1992, with the rank of Captain. He was a dedicated family man, married with three children. Lee joined the Moscow Police Department on March 1, 2001, and attended the 130th Session of the Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Academy, graduating June 15, 2001.
Lee was killed in the line of duty in the early morning hours of May 19, 2007. He was rushing to aid deputies and dispatchers who were taking fire at the Latah County Sheriff's Office, located within the City of Moscow. The gunman who took Lee’s life also took the life of his wife, Crystal Hamilton, and Paul Bauer, the caretaker at the First Presbyterian Church of Moscow. He also wounded a Latah County Sheriff’s Deputy. Lee’s last words to his partner were to tell him to take cover, as they came under fire that night. His service and sacrifice have left a lasting impact on our department and the citizens of Moscow.
Every Moscow Police Department Officer now wears a patch with an image of a clock tower with the time set to 1:49, Officer Newbill’s badge number, and our local Fraternal Order of Police: Lodge #149, in named Lee’s honor. The community gathers for the Officer Newbill Kids Safety Fair on the first Saturday in June, an event that was renamed for him, as it was near and dear to Lee’s heart.
Though time passes, we pause each year on this day to honor Officer Lee Newbill’s unwavering service and the ultimate sacrifice he made to protect his community.

We're proud to say 86% of Idahoans are buckling up on the roads!
Can we make it to 100%? From now through May 31, 2026, we are running a "Click-it or Ticket" emphasis to make sure everyone is wearing their seatbelts. Remember, wearing a seatbelt is the most effective way to prevent fatal injury in a car crash. Stay safe, Idaho!

As we observe National Police Week, we want to take a moment to pause and reflect on the profound meaning of this week. National Police Week was established in 1962, and is a time dedicated to honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, while also recognizing the men and women who continue to serve and protect our streets every single day.

To the citizens of Moscow:
Your support is the backbone of what we do. Whether it’s a friendly wave while we’re out on patrol, a kind word during a difficult call, or your ongoing partnership in keeping our neighborhoods safe—we see you, and we thank you! Being a part of this community is a privilege we don’t take lightly. Our Law Enforcement Officers serve because they care about this town, its families, and our shared future.
As we approach National Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15th, we invite you to join us in a moment of silence to honor the fallen, and a spirit of gratitude for those currently wearing the badge.

Thank you, Moscow, for standing with us. We are honored and proud to serve you.
