There are certain moments in history that stay with us forever. Moments where, years later, we can still remember where we were, who we were with, and what we were doing when we first heard the news. For many of us, September 11, 2001, is that moment.

Twenty-five years later, we remember the lives lost that day and the families whose lives were forever changed. We remember the firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and other first responders who gave their lives, as well as those who later lost their lives from illnesses and complications connected to the attacks. We remember the pilots, flight attendants, and courageous passengers who fought back. We remember the service members who made the ultimate sacrifice in the years that followed, and the search and rescue dogs who worked alongside their handlers in the aftermath.

But we also remember what came from the tragedy: compassion, courage, service, and an extraordinary sense of unity. We were reminded that we are resilient. That in the face of unimaginable loss, people will step forward to help.

We see that same spirit every day in the people who serve our communities. We thank our firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and public works crews who are always ready to respond, protect, and help. And we thank the ordinary bystanders who step forward to help a stranger when no one else is around.

The heroism we witnessed on September 11 continues to inspire heroism in others.
