In Remembrance of 9/11

At the heart of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum’s mission is the promise to commemorate the 2,983 killed as a result of the 9/11 and February 26, 1993 attacks. The Memorial and the Museum fulfills this sacred responsibility in many ways—through memorialization, through education and, in some cases, through artistic expression.

One of the Museum’s most recognizable installations is a piece by artist Spencer Finch titled “Trying to Remember the Color of the Sky on That September Morning.”

This larger-than-life installation is part of the Memorial Museum’s permanent collection and was commissioned in 2014 before the Museum opened its doors to the public.

The piece is comprised of 2,983 individual watercolor squares—each representing a victim of the 2001 and 1993 attacks—and symbolizes the idea of memory. Many remember the beauty of the clear blue sky on the morning of 9/11.

But, our own perception of the color blue might not be the same as that of another person. However, just like our perception of color, our memories share a common point of reference.

When the unthinkable took place -
That morning in New York, under the leadership of Captain Paddy Brown, one of the most respected officers in the FDNY, Ladder Company 3 responded with urgency. Their mission, like that of countless other units, was to ascend the North Tower, assist in evacuations, and fight the raging fires.

The truck itself, a 1994 Seagrave 100-foot aerial ladder, was parked near the base of the North Tower. Its strategic position was meant to provide a vital lifeline, ready to extend its ladder to higher floors, support rescue operations, and act as a mobile command post. But as the towers defied all expectations and began to collapse, the very ground around the World Trade Center became a zone of unimaginable chaos and destruction. The sheer force of the falling steel and concrete pulverized everything in its path.

The loss of life among the FDNY on 9/11 was unprecedented in the history of the department. Out of the 343 firefighters killed, many were from elite units like Ladder 3, who were deeply experienced and instrumental in large-scale emergencies. Their collective sacrifice underscored the immense danger and the unwavering commitment of the fire service.

IT'S NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH: Let's learn things

What do we do in addition to sending out weather updates? Well...

OREM is primarily responsible for the planning, preparing, responding to, and successful recovery from disasters

Below are just a few of OREM's Responsibilities when a disaster strikes:
1. Planning and Preparedness
Develop and maintain a Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan that covers all hazards relevant to the jurisdiction
(natural disasters, hazardous materials incidents, public safety emergencies, etc.)
Ensure the jurisdiction has Continuity of Operations (COOP) and Continuity of Government (COG) plans
Conduct risk assessments, hazard mitigation planning, and public education programs to improve community readiness
Coordinate with state and federal agencies to align plans and resources

2. Emergency Response Coordination
Serve as the primary coordination point for all emergency response activities during incidents, including law enforcement, fire, EMS, and other agencies
Activate and manage the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) during incidents.
Direct the deployment of local resources, manage shelter and evacuation operations, and ensure public safety.
Communicate official information to the public through established channels, including social media and press releases.

3. Resource Management & Coordination
Identify, inventory, and maintain local emergency resources (personnel, equipment, supplies) and ensure they are ready for deployment.
Arrange for mutual aid and request assistance from state and federal agencies when needed.
Manage financial and logistical support for response and recovery efforts.

4. Recovery and Reconstruction
Lead local disaster recovery activities in coordination with the Local Disaster Recovery Manager (LDRM) and other stakeholders.
Oversee damage assessment, debris removal, and rebuilding efforts.
Ensure continuity of essential services during and after disasters.

5. Community Engagement and Public Safety
Engage local government, private sector, NGOs, and community groups in preparedness and response planning.
Support vulnerable populations, including individuals with disabilities and access needs
Provide public safety guidance, including hazard-specific protective actions (e.g., shelter-in-place, evacuation)

We invite you to join Chairwoman Dr. Alieka Anderson-Henry and Fire Chief Tim Sweat as we commemorate the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001.

The observance will begin at 8:46 a.m. at Clayton County Fire & Emergency Services Headquarters, located at 6345 Garden Walk Blvd., Riverdale, GA 30274—the exact time American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

As part of this solemn remembrance, CCFES will unveil a 25th Anniversary Commemorative Plaque honoring those who lost their lives, the heroes who selflessly answered the call, and our enduring promise to never forget.

Join us as we remember September 11, 2001, and honor the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering spirit that continues to inspire our nation.
