Last week, NCDOT teams completed a mission to the Bodie Island Lighthouse, where we have been managing invasive phragmites since 2018.

Working in partnership with the National Park Service, the UAS team and Division 1 used drones to capture imagery and evaluate the area. This allowed the NCDOT Environmental Analysis Unit to spray large infestation zones. Today, we have nearly eradicated the species so that native plants can grow in their place!

Phragmites block native salt marsh vegetation and provide little to no food or shelter for wildlife that depend on salt marsh ecosystems.
