Loomis Day recognizes the man who received the patent for wireless telegraphy in 1872. The Washington, D.C. dentist, Mahlon Loomis, received US patent number 129,971titled “An Improvement in Telegraphing” on wireless telegraphy in July of 1872 beating Guglielmo Marconi's United Kingdom patent by nearly 25 years. Leading up to his patent, Loomis conducted many experiments in electricity using kites flying miles apart in the mountains of Virginia. Then in 1868 before several scientists and Congressmen, he demonstrated his wireless telegraphic system.

Each year, approximately 100,000 senior adults will participate in activities across the United States for this national observance. Seniors benefit in numerous ways from physical activity. Exercises can be done at home, a community pool or a local center. And seniors aren't limited to just one type of exercise either. There are many to choose from. And many activities can be modified to fit any limitations. Yoga, walking and swimming are all low impact routines that offer a range of benefits late in life and for all abilities.

National Missing Children's Day shines a spotlight on child safety. The day also honors the dedicated professionals who work tirelessly protecting children around the country. In 1983, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed National Missing Children's Day recognizing the hundreds of thousands of children who went missing each year. Just a few short years before, six-year-old Etan Patz disappeared from his New York City home on his way from the bus to school on May 25, 1979. The observance commemorated the date of Etan’s disappearance. In addition, it also honored missing children everywhere. As a result, a massive search, along with media attention brought public attention on the problem of child abductions. It also brought awareness to the lack of plans to address child abductions.

Memorial Day honors and remembers all men and women who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day is also a day to remember all loved ones who have passed away. Traditionally on Memorial Day, the flag of the United States of America is raised briskly to the top of the staff then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position where it remains until noon. At noon, it is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day. When the flag is at half-staff, the position is in remembrance of the more than one million men and women who gave their lives for their country. Raising the flag at noon signifies the nation lives, that the country is resolved not to let their sacrifice be in vain but to rise up in their honor and continue to fight for liberty and justice for all.

Brother’s Day honors the brothers in our lives. Whether we have one or many, they hold a special place in our hearts. Even for those who don’t have one, someone in their life is usually like a brother to them. Brothers from other mothers are found in a best friend, a brother-in-law, or a cousin. They are the men in our lives we count on even when we don’t talk very often. We share memories, and challenges that frequently began with the phrase, “Watch this!” soon followed by a few stitches. While minding their own business, they are also prepared to step in when necessary. That’s what brothers do.

National Maritime Day recognizes the launch of the maritime industry in the United States. The celebration also honors America’s Merchant Marines for their contributions and sacrifices for our country. Special acknowledgment is given to ships and seafarers that have held a prominent place in our nation’s history. As one of the oldest industries, its time-honored traditions compose a full and rich history. While the holiday commemorates a transatlantic event, U.S. maritime industry encompasses nearly every state in the nation with workers transporting vessels on lakes, rivers, and oceans. The maritime industry also calls for workers with expertise in fishing, aquaculture, processing, diving, and transportation.

Like many women during the American Civil War, Clara Barton (1821-1912) rolled up her sleeves, bandaging, and nursing wounded soldiers. Following the war in 1869, she traveled to Europe, and for several years Barton volunteered her time working with the International Red Cross during the Franco-Prussian War. Upon returning to the United States, she was determined to bring the Red Cross to America. National American Red Cross Founder's Day marks the anniversary of the American Red Cross. Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross in 1881 and became the first president of the organization. She led the organization for the next twenty-three years.
