MFC responded to a one-car motor vehicle accident on Route 109 Friday.

The crash required MFC members to detach a section of the roadside cable guardrail, a system of wooden posts and steel cable, to safely access the vehicle and allow for the recovery operation.

These cable guardrails are increasingly being replaced with modern metal-beam guardrail systems, but they’re still common along our local roads. When an accident involves one, our crews may need to cut or disconnect the cable system as part of the extrication or recovery process.

Thursday night’s drill included both vehicle extrication and car fire tactics — two scenarios that can happen at any moment in our area.

Just over 24 hours later, at approximately 1:00 AM Saturday morning, MFC was toned out for a motor vehicle accident.

It’s a pretty good reminder of why we train. Thursday night we got to cut up a car, work with the tools, get some hands-on experience, and spend time working together as a crew. We have a lot of fun doing it, but there’s a serious reason behind it — when the tones drop at 1:00 AM, we want to be ready to get to work.

And we’re always looking for more people to join us.

You don’t have to be a firefighter when you walk through the door. We’ll teach you. What we need are people who are willing to learn, work as a team, and be there for their neighbors when they need us.

Nature: Motor Vehicle Crash

At 1:02am, MFC Rescue 6 and Engine 5 rolled out, responding to a motor vehicle accident at a White Memorial trail head near the intersection of Route 63 and Route 61. Responders located a single vehicle which had snapped an Eversource pole. Fortunately the driver was unharmed. After the driver was evaluated by Litchfield Ambulance Association, MFC was able to clear the scene and return all units to service.

Nature: Motor Vehicle Crash

At 2:05 p.m. today, the Morris Fire Company was dispatched to the area of 239 Thomaston Road for a reported motor vehicle accident involving a box truck that had rolled over.

Morris Rescue 6, MFC Fire Police, and the Utility responded with crews to assist. Litchfield Ambulance evaluated the truck's sole occupant, who fortunately sustained only minor injuries.

Route 109 was temporarily closed while Merli's Automotive & Towing worked to safely upright and remove the vehicle from the roadway.

Honoring Washington CT Fire Dept 100th Anniversary, Morris Fire Company members joined dozens of fire departments from near and far, parading down Route 47 in celebration of a century of dedicated service.

The evening brought together firefighters, apparatus, and community members to recognize the proud traditions of the fire service and the volunteers who have protected their communities for generations. It was an honor to stand alongside so many departments and help celebrate this remarkable milestone.

Congratulations to Washington Fire Department on 100 years of service, commitment, and community pride. Here’s to the next century of protecting and serving.

This past Thursday provided a great opportunity to test hydrants throughout town while giving our operators valuable time on the pumps.

Regular hydrant testing helps ensure that critical water supplies are available and functioning properly. It also reinforces the importance of knowing where our resources are located. Whether responding to a structure fire in the center of town or a remote incident on a back road, firefighters and apparatus operators benefit from having a strong understanding of hydrant locations, water supply options, and the unique challenges of different areas within our area.

Maximizing every opportunity to train, MFC members tackled several objectives during last night’s drill night. Multiple scenarios were staged, allowing firefighters to sharpen a wide range of skills in realistic situations.

At the first scene, crews masked up to battle a simulated dumpster fire. Firefighters used hydraulic ventilation techniques to push heat and smoke away from the dumpster lid while other members used hand tools to force it open, giving the hand line better access to extinguish the fire safely and effectively.

Meanwhile, around the corner, another crew responded to a mock motor vehicle accident involving a large pine tree crushing the roof of a car. Using Res-Q-Jacks, firefighters stabilized and lifted the tree before deploying Hurst e-draulic extrication tools to cut posts, remove structural components, and roll the dashboard to gain access to potential victims.
