Candidate Dawn Teresa Parkot For Morris School District Board of Education

Candidate Dawn Teresa Parkot For Morris School District Board of Education I am running for the Morris School District Board of Education in Township Morris NJ. Therefore, I am more than ready to step into this roll.

I have been involved with bettering education for students with disabilities, since I was a student in the Morris School District, I have long worked for positive change in schools. I want to bring fresh ideas and positive solutions to the Morris School District by running for the board of education. I have always been very concerned about providing all children a real education. I believe there a

re workable solutions available that will improve education for every student. For the past year, I have been keeping up with all the happenings with the Morris School District by the internet, and I went to a few in person school board meetings. I am extremely qualified for this position. I attended the University of Notre Dame where I was the first student with multiple disabilities in the history of the university. In 1995, I graduated cm laude in mathematics. In 2000, I graduated magna cm laude with a Masters Degree in Computer Science and Engineering. I was extremely proud to see that there is now a brand-new building to house the Office for Students with Disabilities, which serves their numerous disabled students. The building even bears the year the Office was started, which was in 1991 -- the very same year as my freshman year. Talk about creating a large footprint on a place. The last 11 years, I have been running my own organization, which is called The Climb Organization. As President of the Climb Organization, I am responsible for all fundraising, marketing, and administration for this non-profit. I strongly advocate for human rights for all individuals with disabilities and have lectured at The University of Notre Dame, Carnegie Mellon University, Georgetown University, and Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. I have testified before both the New Jersey Assembly and Senate advocating for human rights for individuals with disabilities. The last 15 years, I have been a Morris Township Committee Member of Americans with Disabilities Act Compliance Committee.

This letter is in support of Dawn Parkot for the Morris Township Board of Education.

It’s an unusual year for local board of education elections. During my many years as a resident of Morris County I had never witnessed or experienced a candidate as concerned and highly involved in the community as Dawn. Her dedication to children at all levels is equitable and fair. Miss Parkot possesses the education, knowledge and skills required to be effective member of the Board. She brings a strong background in Mathematics and Masters Degree in Computer Science and Engineering. I am very proud that she was the first student with multiple disabilities at the University of Notre Dame. She is a perfect candidate for Board governance and management and displays the commitment to Morris Township that is required for today and the future. Her display of love for the community demonstrated a genuine concern and kindness for the well-being of our community’s children to include Cultural and physical issues. She is an accessible, dedicated community volunteer. Dawn’s focus is clearly on what’s important – the students and maintaining quality programs. She believes there are workable solutions available that will improve the education of all students. For example: "She would like the K-5 after school tutoring program to last the entire school year". "Frelinghuysen Middle School and Morristown High School should offer year-round tutoring to all students".

I am honored to endorse Dawn Parkot for the Morris School District Board of Education!

On November 14, 2016, members of the Climb Organization Board had the pleasure of attending the Guardian of the Family Annual Gala held by the New Jersey Family Policy Council. The event was held at The Venetian in Garfield, NJ. This is an absolutely beautiful venue, and the attentive staff spared no effort seeing to every detail of the evening.

Len Deo, founder and President of the New Jersey Family Policy Council had asked me to prepare some brief comments on what motivates me in “Doing the Right Thing” especially with regard to the Climb Organization’s advocacy work on disabled human rights.

I had prepared a talk that was to be limited to five minutes and I would be the opening speaker to the keynote speaker, who is a true American hero, Kris Paranto - “Tanto”. Tanto, his radio call sign and nickname, is one of the brave security contractors who attempted to rescue US Ambassador Christopher Stevens from the attack on the US embassy in Benghazi, Libya. I was very honored to be his “opening act”.

Shortly into the dinner program, Len introduced me. My speaking device performed flawlessly, and my talk even caused a lot of laughs. As I was looking for the sound tech to disconnect my device, Len spoke from the rostrum and announced an award was to be presented.

To my surprise, I received the New Jersey Family Policy Council’s Family, Faith & Freedom Award. I was completely overwhelmed both by Len’s very kind words describing the Climb Organization’s efforts fighting for disabled rights and the generous applause from the audience. It is truly gratifying and enormously encouraging to be singled out for this organization’s efforts when all too often, we encounter entrenched opposing opinions. In our heart, we believe that we are only doing what we are called to do. I will remain forever grateful to the New Jersey Family Policy Council for their beautiful award and their generous support of The Climb Organization.
