Fire Education Friday:

Lithium-Ion Battery Safety

From phones and laptops to e-bikes and power tools, lithium-ion batteries are everywhere. While generally safe, damaged or improperly charged batteries can start fires quickly.

•Use only approved chargers.
•Avoid charging batteries overnight or when you're away from home.
•Stop using batteries that are damaged, swollen, overheating, or have been dropped. 🔋
•Keep batteries away from extreme heat.
•If a battery starts smoking, hissing, or emitting an unusual odor, move away and call 911.

A few simple precautions can help prevent a serious fire.

- Propane is a great tool for heating, cooking, and outdoor fun—but it needs to be handled with care.

- Here are a few quick tips to stay safe:

• Check for leaks – If you smell rotten eggs or sulfur, turn off the tank immediately and leave the area.
• Store tanks properly – Always keep propane tanks outdoors, upright, and away from heat sources.
• Inspect hoses and connections – Cracked or worn parts can lead to dangerous leaks.
• Keep it ventilated – Never use propane grills, heaters, or stoves inside your home, garage, or enclosed spaces.
• Turn it off when not in use – Shut off both the appliance and the tank valve.

- If you suspect a propane leak:
Get out, stay out, and call 911.

- A little prevention goes a long way in keeping your family and home safe.

Fire Education Friday

“Close Before You Doze”

Most people sleep with their bedroom door open without realizing it can make a major difference during a fire. A closed door can help slow the spread of heat, smoke, and toxic gases and potentially giving your family extra time to escape.

Before bed tonight:

•Close all bedroom doors
•Make sure smoke alarms are working
•Review your family escape plan
•Keep exits clear and easy to access

In a house fire, seconds matter. A simple closed door could save a life.

In the attached picture, is a study conducted by UL (Underwriters Laboratory). They are the organization that studies fire effects on different objects. The room on the left is a room that had the door closed during a fire and the room on the right had the door open during a fire.
