Morgan Family, owners of a large share of the land on which the municipality was developed. Morgan built his home in what was called Tennessee Valley on the Leon River in 1885. In the early 1960’s, most of the Morgan estate was sold to the Great Western Investment Corporation (later Terramar Corporation) and the Lakeshore Development Company. These two commercial enterprises were responsible for t
he birth of the City, contributed to its ultimate shape and character, and named most of the city streets as a promotional device to attract customers. Terramar’s sales office, deeded to the City in 1976, served for many years as the City Hall. On June 16, 1970, an application proposing incorporation of the City was supported by twenty-eight people. An election to decide the issue was ordered held on June 30, 1970. The name proposed for the City was Morgan’s Point. “Resort” was added because a Morgan’s Point, Texas already existed. The City of Morgan’s Point Resort became an incorporated city by a vote of thirty-seven for, twenty-three against, and one blank ballot. The City was officially incorporated on July 1, 1970. An election to choose a Mayor, City Marshal, and five Alderman was held on July 21, 1970 . 1970. The first elected officials were: Mayor D. Rainey, and Aldermen Joel S. Folsom, M. Smith, L. Burdette, Gilbert E. Maires, and William D. Gibson. By special election January 21, 1978, a City Manager form of government was approved by a vote of sixty-nine for and 10 against. Louis F. Griffin was the first City Manager. In December of 1976, the office of City Marshal was abolished and the Police Department along with the office of Chief of Police was created. The Morgan’s Point Resort Volunteer Fire Department was organized prior to incorporation. This non-profit organization began operation with twenty-eight unpaid volunteers and five trucks. In 1973, the Ladies Auxiliary to the Fire Department was established for ongoing financial and moral support. The marina was floated from its original location at the foot of Morgan’s Point Boulevard to its present location. The move was made necessary by a Corps of Engineers program to raise the water level of Lake Belton by twenty-five feet. The marina was purchased by the City in late 1976. In 1980, through extensive citizen effort, the Morgan’s Point Resort Lending Library, now the Mary Ruth Briggs Library, was established. Also in the early 1980’s, the city clubhouse was renovated and expanded through local fundraising and support. It was renamed the Morgan’s Point Resort Community Center.
