🚔 Traffic Tuesday!

Apparently, the roads were feeling extra chaotic this week. Here are a few highlights:

🚗 The World’s Slowest Getaway
A caller reported a vehicle traveling about 5 mph, swerving between lanes, stopping in the roadway, then reversing to confront the caller. Nothing says “avoid police attention” like stopping traffic to start an argument.

Officers located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. The driver showed signs of intoxication, refused commands to exit, and was arrested for DUI and resisting/delaying an officer.

🚦 Red Lights: Still Not Suggestions
A driver ran a red light near Dunne Ave. and Hwy 101 and collided with another vehicle, causing injuries. The driver was cited for multiple violations, including driving without a valid license, no proof of insurance, and registration issues.

Violations are not achievement badges.

🍺 When Both Seats Generate Paperwork
Officers contacted a driver suspected of DUI. The passenger was also determined to be too intoxicated to care for themselves and was arrested for public intoxication. Nobody wins.

💡 Carriage Lamp Way
Officers responded to a parked vehicle whose lights kept turning on and off. The person in the driver’s seat showed significant signs of intoxication and was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

The headlights may have been the most responsible occupants.

🌳 Butterfield / Central: Landscaping Was Not Consulted
Officers found a vehicle that had traveled through multiple trees and a fence. The registered owner was located nearby, appeared intoxicated, and denied involvement.

Unfortunately, the vehicle had already submitted its statement to the trees.

🚒 Cochrane / De Paul
A vehicle collided with a fire hydrant. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

The fire hydrant was unavailable for comment.

Drive sober. Obey traffic signals. And please stop picking fights with trees, fences, and fire hydrants. They remain undefeated. 🚔

On August 28, 2026, the Morgan Hill Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence (DUI) Checkpoint from 6:00 pm to 2:00 am at an undisclosed location.

DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints are to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Traffic Officer/ DRE Nathan Rodriguez said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

Morgan Hill Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. While medicinal and recreational ma*****na are legal, driving under the influence of ma*****na is illegal.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

🚦 **TRAFFIC TUESDAY** 🚦

Another week, another reminder that traffic enforcement isn’t just about tickets—it’s about keeping people safe on Morgan Hill’s roads.

🍺 **Three DUI arrests**
Officers made three separate DUI arrests involving drivers suspected of operating vehicles or motorcycles under the influence of alcohol:

* Aston Court & Mercedes Drive
* Murphy Avenue & Barrett Avenue
* Tennant Avenue & Juan Hernandez Drive

🚗 **Hit-and-Run**
Officers investigated multiple hit-and-run collisions, including a white truck that rear-ended a vehicle on Monterey Road and left the scene after the driver said they were calling police. Another driver reported being struck by a gray Nissan at E. Dunne Avenue and Condit Avenue.

🏁 **Large Vehicle Meetup**
More than 100 vehicles arrived at the Target parking lot for a planned meetup. Officers saturated the area, and the vehicles eventually dispersed and moved the meetup elsewhere.

🏍️ **Motorcycle Enforcement**
A motorcycle stop near Keith Way resulted in an arrest after the rider initially refused to come outside. Officers ultimately took the driver into custody. DUI

🚲 **e-Motorcycles**
Two e-motorcycles were towed from E. Dunne Avenue and Saddleback Drive. The juvenile riders were cited and released to their parents.

🚧 **Collision**
A two-vehicle collision at Tilton Avenue and Dougherty Avenue resulted in a street sign being sheared off.

Big picture: **slow down, stop at the signs, don’t drive impaired, and if you’re involved in a collision—stay at the scene.**

A passerby reported two subjects breaking into a pickup truck on Watsonville Road, just after midnight. When thieves steal construction tools, the impact goes far beyond the property loss—it can disrupt someone’s ability to work and provide for their family.

We often remind people to secure their valuables, but the responsibility for theft belongs with the person who chooses to steal—not the person who was victimized. Sometimes there simply isn’t a practical way to secure everything, especially when tools and equipment are part of someone’s livelihood.

Officers arrived within three minutes, but the suspects had already left the area.

Unfortunately for them, Dispatch entered the chat. 👀

Using automated license plate technology, our dispatchers located the suspect vehicle and discovered it was headed back toward Morgan Hill after allegedly making another unauthorized “shopping trip” in Gilroy. Officers spotted the vehicle near Santa Teresa Boulevard and Highland Avenue and conducted a traffic stop. And that’s where today’s episode of “Maybe Crime Wasn’t the Best Career Choice” came to an end. 🚓✨

Both occupants were taken into custody without incident. Officers recovered the tools stolen in Morgan Hill plus property connected to the Gilroy case.

🚔 Officers said, “Say less.”
🔗 Handcuffs said, “Not in Morgan Hill.”

STOLEN ATV RECOVERED 🚔

On August 17, officers investigated a burglary in the Llagas Road area where a red ATV and several yard tools were stolen from a barn.

A suspect vehicle and two individuals were observed in connection with the theft. Using automated license plate recognition technology, officers tracked down the suspect vehicle. A probation search led officers to the stolen ATV, which had already been modified.

🚔 Traffic Tuesday: This Week’s Traffic Tales

🏎️ Monterey Rd. / Colony Way: A driver passed officers at nearly 90 MPH, then attempted to evade them westbound on San Martin Avenue. The getaway hit a snag when navigating turns proved more challenging than expected. The driver was taken into custody without further incident.

🚗 Dougherty Ave. / Basil Ave.: Officers responded to a driver who parked in a resident’s driveway, knocked on the door, and lingered. The vehicle left as officers arrived, but was stopped nearby. Officers determined the driver was under the influence of prescription medication. Arrested.

🍻 Butterfield Blvd. / E. Main Ave.: During a traffic stop, officers found a driver who: 1) had a license suspended for DUI, 2) was on DUI probation, and 3) was driving with a .12% BAC. Come on! That’s a triple threat nobody wants on the road.

🚶 Butterfield Blvd. / E. Main Ave.: An intoxicated pedestrian walked directly into the roadway in front of a northbound vehicle. An unrelated witness confirmed what occurred. The pedestrian sustained minor injuries and was transported for treatment.

💥 Cochrane Rd. / Butterfield Blvd.: Two vehicles entered the intersection, both believing they had the green light. Unfortunately, they couldn’t both be right. They collided, and one passenger reported head and back pain.

🚘 E. Main Ave. / Calle Mazatan: A driver collided with a parked vehicle and fled. About two hours later, officers spotted the driver walking nearby, clearly intoxicated. Arrested.

🚛 Madrone Pkwy. / Miner Ln.: A truck lost an axle while traveling on Madrone Parkway and collided with a tree on the sidewalk.

🚦 Traffic Tuesday Takeaway

Four DUIs this week. Slow down. Stay sober. Stay alert. And make sure you’re actually allowed to drive.

🚨 COPPER THIEF ARRESTED
On August 3, unknown suspects cut off a copper backflow valve on Cochrane Road, disrupting water service to a local business complex and causing thousands of dollars in damage.
Our officers identified a suspect vehicle, and automated license plate technology later gave us a heads-up when the vehicle returned to town this morning.

Officers stopped the vehicle and determined the 47-year-old driver was on active probation. A search of the vehicle uncovered narcotics, burglary tools, more than 100 pounds of copper wire, and CLIMBING EQUIPMENT DESIGNED TO SCALE TELEPHONE POLES.

Because apparently, stealing copper requires both a ground game and an aerial strategy.

The vehicle was basically equipped for an entire career in criminal copper acquisition.

And yes, that's a Daihatsu. We have questions, too. 😂

The suspect was arrested and booked on the applicable charges.

🚨🎒 TRAFFIC TUESDAY: BACK-TO-SCHOOL EDITION 🎒🚨
Well, folks… the backpacks are back, the school bells are ringing, and suddenly everyone has somewhere to be at exactly the same time. 😂
As students head back to school, expect heavier traffic, longer lines, and a few more pedestrians, bicyclists, buses, and crossing guard helpers in the mix.
So before you head out, here’s your Back-to-School Driver Survival Guide:
🐢 SLOW. DOWN.
School zones may have reduced speed limits of 20–25 MPH, as posted. The goal is to get everyone to school safely—not to set a personal best for the morning commute.
📵 THE PHONE CAN WAIT.
Put it down and focus on driving. That notification will still be there when you arrive.
🚸 CROSSWALKS ARE NOT OPTIONAL.
Keep an eye out for students walking and biking, pedestrians who may suddenly enter the roadway, and those who are helping everyone get across safely.
🚙 DROP-OFF ≠ PARKING.
Keep those drop-off lanes moving! Please don't double-park, block driveways or bike lanes, or create your own private loading zone in the middle of traffic.
🚌 SEE FLASHING RED LIGHTS? STOP.
When a school bus is stopped with its red lights flashing, STOP. This is not the time for the “I can probably squeeze by” maneuver.
⏰ AND HERE'S THE BIG ONE: LEAVE EARLY.
Give yourself extra time. Traffic may be slower, your commute may take longer, and that's okay.
A few extra minutes of patience is a whole lot better than explaining to an officer why you were in such a hurry. 😉
🎒 New school year. Same goal: Everyone gets there safely.
Slow down. Put the phone away. Watch the crosswalks. Be patient.
