Today, we celebrate the remarkable career of Derrick Blevins as he retires after 22 years of dedicated service to the City of Morehead.

Throughout his career, Chief Blevins demonstrated outstanding leadership, professionalism and an unwavering commitment to protecting and serving our community. His impact on the Morehead Police Department and the citizens of Morehead will be felt for years to come.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Chief Blevins for his years of faithful service and wish him nothing but happiness, health and success in this next chapter of life.

Thank you for your dedication to Morehead and Rowan County. Your legacy of service will not be forgotten.

Jury Duty Scam!!

We have just received two complaints in the past hour from residents who were scammed. Both these individuals reported receiving calls claiming they had missed jury duty & were being fined. They were informed they would get their fine reimbursed when they appeared at court.

Always remember to never give any caller your bank account information, credit card numbers or any personal information, regardless of how convincing they may sound.

Scammers will always notice what is going on in any given community, jury duty, tax collection, etc… and base their scams on those events .

Attention: Parents, teachers, students & others arriving at the high school, middle school & McBrayer Elementary tomorrow morning !

As most of you are aware Rowan County Schools start back tomorrow. Please be patient, be thoughtful, & please do not block intersections. For the past 11 years we have tried to help the traffic flow in & out of Viking Drive on the first two days of school. The past couple of years many parents, & school employees have told us they feel the traffic flows better when deputies are not present. With this thought in mind, we will not be directing traffic in the morning but will have deputies close by.

Please be patient with other drivers and remind everyone to slow down & watch for buses stopped along your morning & evening commute.

The Rowan County Sheriff's office is NOT calling people regarding jury duty. We will never ask for money over the phone or call you regarding a warrant. Please do not fall for this SCAM!! BEWARE it does appear like it's coming from a local 606 number This is a fake!!!

We have received several calls regarding phone calls stating they are from ROWAN COUNTY JAIL. This is a scam please do not give anyone information over the phone or any funds. The ROWAN COUNTY JAIL will NOT call you asking for MONEY.

As many of you know, our Rowan County Sheriff, Matt Sparks, recently experienced the heartbreaking loss of his brother, Rick Sparks.

Out of respect for the Sparks family, the Rowan County Sheriff's Office will be closed on Friday, July 17, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. as our staff attends the funeral.

During this difficult time, we extend our deepest condolences to the Sparks family. We hope they find peace, comfort, and strength in the love and support of their family, friends, and our community.

We appreciate your understanding and apologize for any inconvenience. Regular office hours will resume at 1:00 p.m.

Mailboxes damaged !

We have received several reports of mailboxes being knocked down or damaged on Holly Fork, Campbells Branch, and a few other roadways in the area. At least one person reported seeing an older model blue pickup. If you live in that area please check any security camera footage you may have to look for suspicious vehicles. Contact the sheriff’s office 606-784-5446 if you have information concerning this post.

Pictured below is Deputy Steven Cranston, being sworn in by District Judge Willie Roberts. Cranston comes to us from Columbiana, Alabama where he served as a school resource officer. Cranston will be assigned to the Rowan County Middle School.

Steven & his wife Chaney have two children. They came to the Morehead area for Steven to serve as the Pastor at Rodburn Church of God here in Morehead. If you see him out say hello & welcome him to our community.
