Morehead State has a fascinating military history! Let's look at it this TBT.

Have you ever heard of our WWII "blue jackets" or heard of our campus affectionately being referred to as a "seaport"? Chances are that you haven't before today!

Here's a picture of a class of our "blue jacket" naval students, studying to serve as electricians, from June 14, 1944.

A Founding Father looked at the finished Constitution and refused to put his name on it.

George Mason had helped write Virginia's own bill of rights years earlier. When the framers in Philadelphia produced a Constitution with no bill of rights at all, he stood up near the end of the convention and said the document needed one, or he wouldn't sign. He didn't sign.

Alexander Hamilton disagreed, and not quietly. In Federalist No. 84, he argued that writing down a list of protected rights wasn't just unnecessary. It was dangerous. His reasoning: if you list the rights government can't touch, anyone reading it later will assume everything left off the list is fair game. A list doesn't protect freedom, he warned. It quietly narrows it.

Mason's side won the political fight. Ratification depended on a promise: add a bill of rights, or several states wouldn't sign on. James Madison, who had agreed with Hamilton at the convention, reversed himself to keep that promise and win a contested election back home. He drafted the first ten amendments himself.

But Hamilton's warning hadn't gone away, so Madison tried to defuse it directly. He wrote a clause almost nobody remembers today: the Ninth Amendment, stating plainly that listing some rights doesn't mean the rest were surrendered.

It didn't fully work. For over two centuries, American courts have leaned almost entirely on the rights that made the list, free speech, due process, the right to bear arms, while treating the Ninth Amendment as barely enforceable. During his own 1987 Supreme Court confirmation hearing, Judge Robert Bork compared it to an inkblot on the page, unreadable. Rights that were never written down have had to fight for recognition in court, one case at a time, close to the exact outcome Hamilton predicted.

So which Founder actually saw this coming? Mason, who thought silence was surrender and forced the list into existence? Or Hamilton, who warned that the moment you start listing freedoms, courts stop protecting the ones you left off it?

The Rowan County Veterans’ Foundation seeks a part-time contract employee to care for the museum’s collection, develop exhibits, and share the stories of local veterans with the community.

What You’ll Do:
The selected candidate will organize and preserve artifacts such as uniforms, medals, photographs, and documents; create exhibits that honor veterans and highlight local military history; work with veterans, families, schools, and community groups; support events, programs, and fundraising; maintain records; assist with basic museum administration; and implement security measures to protect the premises, artifacts, and contents.

What we’re Looking for in Prospective Candidates:
Candidates should have an interest in veterans’ history and community service; experience with museums, archives, or history projects; strong organizational skills; comfort working with volunteers; and the ability to communicate clearly and engage visitors. Formal training is preferred but not required.

Details:
Part-time (30 hours per week), flexible hours, some evenings and weekends. Pay based on experience and available funding.
Contract shall be for 12 months, renewal based on performance and funding. Responsibilities may broaden over time.
The Director reports to the Foundation Board and its President. This is a contractor position with no benefits, and payment will be made every 2 weeks.
