Monday, June 8

12:15 p.m. Update: S. 7th Street is expected to reopen prior to 1 p.m., following clean up related to an early morning diesel spill.

Original Post: S. 7th Street Temporarily Closed due to Fuel Spill

Morehead City Fire-EMS was dispatched to S. 7th Street for a large fuel spill at approximately 4:40 a.m. An estimated 25-30 gallons of diesel was spilled on the street while aiming to be placed into the fuel tank for Morehead Gulf Docks. Some of the fuel did get into the storm drain and the water around the docks.

The street will remain closed through mid-day as additional work is needed to fully clean up following the spill. Morehead City Police are also on scene to assist with traffic control.

Per protocol, The U.S. Coast Guard and Carteret County Emergency Management were notified.

A-Shift personnel participated in the statewide Smoke Alarm Saturday. This event is held annually, on the first Saturday of June. Crews targeted neighborhoods that saw the most fire related incidents in 2025.

Reminder:
-Test Smoke Alarms at least once a month.
-Does your alarm have a battery? If so, the battery (typically a 9volt) needs replacing at least once a year.
-Smoke Alarms should be replaced every 10 years.
-Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level (including basements) of the home.
-If your alarm is chirping, the battery is dead.
-Please remember your elderly neighbors or family members when checking yours.
-If your home utilizes gas appliances, we encourage you to also consider installing CO detectors.

Morehead City Residents:
If you are in need of smoke alarms, have questions or need assistance installing alarms, please contact Morehead City Fire-EMS Department at 252-726-5040.

We would be happy to test your existing alarms, install a new one if needed or answer any questions you may have.

Remember: working smoke alarms save lives!
