In 2004, the 116‑foot tugboat Titan was sunk in 60 feet of water on AR‑345, becoming a new addition to the artificial reef site. Today, the wreck is a well‑known destination for fishing and diving. This video features footage collected in July 2026 by divers with the Artificial Reef Program as they evaluated the stability and structural condition of the wreck.
During these survey dives, divers assess the structural health of the deck, hull, and superstructure, along with documenting any sedimentation or scour on and around the vessel. Fish species observed throughout the dive are also recorded.
The 22-year-old wreck received good marks overall as the wreck still maintains a relatively high relief of 6 feet or more. However, much of the superstructure and portions of the deck have collapsed. The wheelhouse and aft deckhouse have collapsed or been torn off, though the smokestack remains mostly upright. The forward deck is mostly intact while the stern deck is more than 50% collapsed. Overall, the outer hull is intact and in good shape. There was no appreciable sedimentation or scour at the time of the survey. The Titan is expected to remain a highlight of AR‑345 for many years to come.

On this , we're highlighting Josh who caught his first-ever tagged fish, a 27¾-inch Southern Flounder!
Not only was it his first tagged fish, but it was also a personal best catch. Talk about a day to remember! 🙌
Flounder season runs through Sept. 14! Keep an eye out for tags and remember: Cut, Report, and Win! And if it's a red tag, it is worth $100! 💰

🪝 A huge thank you to everyone who has donated their flounder carcasses to our Carcass Collection Program!
Just a reminder: we need the whole fish — not just the head — after it has been filleted. Our biologists use the carcass to measure the fish and determine its age, which helps us better understand and manage the fishery.
Please also remember to fill out the catch information, including the date, location and trip type. You don’t have to provide your name or contact information, but you’ll be entered to win a prize if you do!

Meet Mylee Bartz, Access Point Angler Intercept Survey interviewer with since 2025. She loves getting out on headboats, collecting catch data, and helping the crew unhook fish. Mylee graduated from and majored in marine biology.

APAIS is one of recreational fishing surveys. It gathers catch information from anglers as they complete their fishing trips. Specially trained state interviewers like Mylee conduct the survey at marinas, boat ramps, beaches, piers, and other public fishing access sites.

If you see Mylee or other state interviewers at the docks or on headboats, help make your catch count by providing your fishing trip info when requested. These interviewers play no role in law enforcement. The info is used to support optimal fishing opportunities while ensuring sustainable fish stocks for future generations.

Six North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) boat crew members came to Morehead City today for Marine Patrol’s General Boat Maintenance Course.

Division-certified mechanics shared hands-on tips for oil changes, roadside repairs, trailer maintenance and other essential boat care.

Our mechanics do an outstanding job keeping the Division’s fleet running strong, and we’re proud to share their expertise with a fellow state agency!

🏆 NEW STATE RECORD! 🏆

Talk about a catch of a lifetime! 🎣 Brock Davenport of Beaufort landed a 16-pound Jolthead Porgy off Wrightsville Beach on Aug. 9 — setting a new North Carolina state record!

The 29.5-inch fish knocked the previous record off the books by more than a pound, replacing the 14-pound, 14-ounce record set in 2015.

Today, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol landed a hoist-capable helicopter at our helipad to test the landing space and tour our facility for potential hurricane response and mutual aid.
