Today, Avoyelles Parish experienced historic rainfall. Meteorologists have advised that some areas received nearly 30 inches of rain in a very short period of time.
Through this disaster, I witnessed something truly remarkable once again—the strength, compassion, and resilience of our people. Today, I saw Louisiana people helping Louisiana people.
The day began early with the Simmesport Volunteer Fire Department and other emergency responders evacuating residents from flooded areas. Sadly, many families will go to bed tonight with water in their homes. My thoughts and prayers are with every family affected by this flooding.
I want to extend my sincere gratitude to all of the firefighters, law enforcement officers, public works employees, utility crews, and volunteers who left their own homes and families to help rescue and assist their neighbors. Your dedication and sacrifice do not go unnoticed.
I also spoke with CLECO officials regarding power outages across the parish. Approximately 900 customers are expected to remain without power overnight. Due to rising floodwaters, CLECO was forced to de-energize the 138 kV Yellow Bayou Substation and a 13.2 kV substation in Simmesport to ensure public safety. Crews are working to bring in a mobile transformer to the Yellow Bayou Substation tomorrow to assist with restoration efforts.
Many of the current outages are the result of inadequate electrical line clearance caused by high water levels. As floodwaters recede and conditions become safe, CLECO will be able to re-energize affected lines and restore service to additional customers.
Representative Deshotel has established a form for residents to report flooded homes. The link is included below. Please complete the form if your home has been affected.
While water has started to recede in some areas, other locations continue to experience flooding as water from upstream areas makes its way downstream. Conditions remain dangerous.
Please stay off the roadways unless it is absolutely necessary or an emergency. If you must travel through flooded areas, please be mindful of your speed and show respect for those whose homes are near the roadway. Large wakes can push additional water into homes and cause further damage.
I will be working all night. If you need assistance or have an emergency concern, please do not hesitate to call or text me.
Please continue to pray for our parish, our first responders, utility workers, and the families impacted by this historic flood event.
