As President of the Wilkes Law Enforcement Officers Association I would like to clarify the reasons for the cancelation of this year’s July 4th fireworks. For those who are not familiar with our organization we provide many services to our law enforcement officers in the county as well as services to the community itself. One of those services is the fireworks display each year. Our organization for many years has funded the fireworks display for the community as a way to give back. We have always worked with our local municipalities and the county to coordinate and provide this display. Our organization funds this display with some assistance in the form of donations from the two towns and the county but we are responsible for funding and scheduling the event. This year we were contacted by the fireworks company we utilize to lock in the event. At that time we were still under the States stay at home order and did not have any indication when this would be lifted. Because gatherings were limited and we had no idea when these restrictions would be lifted to allow large gatherings we made the decision to cancel the event. At the time of this decision we were obligated to sign a contract with the fireworks company and provide full payment for the display with no refund if the event could not take place due to state restrictions on gatherings. This decision did not come lightly as this event is a highlight each year for us, but we felt as an organization it needed to be made to conform to the Governor’s Orders and the safety of our community. I also want to say that this decision was made by our organization’s board alone. Once the decision was made we informed the two Town’s Boards and the County Commissioners. The local municipal boards did not make the decision to cancel the fireworks our organization did. We sincerely regret having to make this decision but we did it to protect our community and as an organization representing the law enforcement community we had to make sure we would not violate any orders from the Governor. Finally please understand that the two Towns and the County did not make this decision as it was our responsibility to make the decision to have the event or cancel it. We are truly sorry this decision had to made and look forward to resuming this event in the future to give back to the community as we always have.
