Understanding shelf life can be a game-changer when it comes to managing your pantry and reducing food waste. Many people rely on the “best before” dates to decide whether food is still good, but did you know that some foods last well beyond this date when stored properly? The chart provides valuable information on the shelf life of unopened, shelf-stable foods. For instance, canned goods, pasta, and coffee can last 2-3 years past their best before date, which helps you make the most out of your pantry staples.

It’s important to note that while food past its best before date may still be safe to consume, the quality of the product might decline over time. Spices and dry pasta can still be used for up to 2 years after their best before date, though their potency and flavor may diminish. Items like cookies or carbonated beverages have a shorter shelf life and are best consumed within a year of the best before date to ensure the best taste and safety.

By paying attention to these guidelines, you can avoid the unnecessary waste of perfectly good food and save money by using up pantry staples before they go bad. Regularly check your pantry, and rotate items to ensure that you're using the oldest products first. Knowing what lasts and how long helps you maintain a well-stocked, efficient kitchen without the fear of tossing expired items too soon. 🥫📅

Wednesday evening we held our annual budget meeting at Fairview chapel. The main discussion was regarding the amount given each year to support our rural fire department. As you are all aware the prices of everything have increased over the last few years and this includes the expenses of supplying our area with rural fire service. As a township we will be looking at ways to fill this budgetary gap. Later this year we will be planning a fund raiser to help with this expense. Fire services are imperative to our small rural communities and we all hope we don’t have to use them, but they are critical when you do need them. As a township we are trying to find ways to alleviate this expense without raising the mill levee in the future, however, we will see what the future brings.
