For more than 150 years, public health has reshaped what’s possible in the United States, adding decades to life expectancy and dramatically improving quality of life. These achievements did not happen by accident.

Public health and its programs also work to strengthen protective factors by building strong connections between individuals, families, and the community. When people feel supported, included, and connected to positive activities and relationships, they are less likely to experience isolation or engage in unhealthy behaviors. Through partnerships with schools, local organizations, and community coalitions, public health helps create opportunities that support well-being, resilience, and a sense of belonging.
