Mooresville Graded School District

Mooresville Graded School District A public school district serving children in grades preK through 12. However, academic excellence is not the only area MGSD excels in.

The Mooresville Graded School District is located in the town of Mooresville approximately 30 miles north of Charlotte in the Southern Piedmont region of North Carolina. A district of approximately 6000 students, MGSD consists of three elementary schools, two intermediate schools, two middle schools, and one high school which includes an advanced technology and arts center. MGSD has gained nationa

l recognition for its high academic standards and dedication to every child, every day. As a district it provides every child with a MacBook (grades 3-12) for their use both at home and at school or an iPad (K-2) for their use at school. Due to great students, staff, and community, MGSD is consistently a contender for the top spot in the state when it comes to academic excellence. Our athletic teams are top notch and competitive each and every year. Our school leadership and staff understand that part of a successful education must include work outside of the classroom. Therefore, it is not uncommon for our students to be holding food drives, coat drives, and volunteering for local organizations. It is each of these aspects that make our district so excellent and able to reach every child, every day!

The Joy of Reading: Teacher Feature! ๐Ÿ“š

Today we found some Joy of Reading with our outstanding South Elementary School 1st-grade teacher Ms. Jolene Yerger!

When it comes to timeless classics, Ms. Yergerโ€™s top pick is a beautiful story about an extraordinary spider, a famous pig, and the ultimate power of connection. Any ideas?

"My all-time favorite read is Charlotteโ€™s Web by E.B. White," Ms. Yerger shares. "E.B. White does such a wonderful job of expressing the true meaning of friendship, loyalty and kindness in such a beautiful and bittersweet way!"

The lessons of compassion and devotion found in Zuckerman's barn are exactly the kinds of values Ms. Yerger nurtures in her 1st-grade classroom every single day.

This summer Ms. Yerger is already planning her next literary adventures:

"You will most definitely find me outside, poolside, doing what I love best... reading!"

Thank you, Ms. Yerger, for helping our youngest readers discover the beauty of a great story!

MGSD students and parents: Are you planning to add Charlotteโ€™s Web or another classic to your summer reading list? Where is your favorite place to read during the summer? Let us know below! ๐Ÿ‘‡

The Joy of Reading: Teacher Assistant Storytime!

Our MGSD Joy of Reading initiative heads over to Park View Elementary School to feature the wonderful teacher assistant, Ms. Keona Foye!

Every child has that one special book they beg to hear or read night after night. For Ms. Foye, it was a Sesame Street classic starring a very worried, lovable blue monster.

"The Monster at the End of This Book was one of my favorite childrenโ€™s books," Ms. Foye shares. "It had the characters I love from Sesame Street and when read in a silly voice can make a very interesting story for any child. This was the one story I had to read every night!"

There is nothing quite like the giggles that come from trying to help Grover untie the knots, bust through the brick walls, and turn the pages! Ms. Foye knows firsthand that bringing a story to life with silly voices and pure excitement is the ultimate way to get children hooked on books.

Thank you, Ms. Foye, for bringing that same spark of joy, creativity, and love for reading to our Park View students every single day!

The Joy of Reading: Teacher Feature! ๐Ÿ“š

Our Mooresville Middle School Red Imps 6th-grade teacher Ms. Stephanie Roseman had a favorite, iconic book series that turned her into a lifelong reader! One guess... โ˜Ž๏ธ ๐ŸŽ’.

Growing up in a rural area of North Carolina, Ms. Roseman had plenty of cousins to play with, but didnโ€™t have close access to friends outside of the school day. That all changed when she discovered Stoneybrook, Connecticut, and the pages of "The Baby-Sitters Club"!

"The characters in The Baby-Sitters Club became my core friend group," Ms. Roseman shares. "I loved that they had their own strengths and weaknesses to overcome, including learning how to navigate difficult friendships and scary situations. I especially loved the special edition books, where I got to experience different parts of the world through the eyes of the characters."

Kristy, Mary Anne, Claudia, Stacey, and the rest of the club didn't just provide incredible adventures, they showed Ms. Roseman the power of friendship, resilience, and global exploration right from her own living room. Today, she brings that same passion for connection and empathy into her 6th-grade classroom every single day.

Books truly have a way of bringing the whole world - and a whole new group of friends - right to our fingertips!

The Joy of Reading: Teacher Feature ๐Ÿ“š

Today, we are featuring Mooresville Intermediate School 3rd-grade teacher Ms. Brittany Wardrip, who shares an incredibly powerful reminder that you are NEVER too old to fall back in love with reading.

Ms. Wardrip is a self-proclaimed "book nerd" who openly shares her passion with her 3rd graders, especially how books can be a wonderful escape after a tough day. As a kid, she fell hard for the fantasy genre, and C.S. Lewisโ€™s "The Chronicles of Narnia" was the very first series she ever read.

"It was just so nice to escape into another world while doing something that I loved," Ms. Wardrip shares. "I really do feel like it helped me realize how broad our imaginations can be if we just think outside the box."

Like many of us, adulthood eventually got busy, and Ms. Wardrip stopped reading for a while. But right around age 30, she picked up "Narnia" again and noticed a line in the book's dedication that changed everything: โ€œBut someday youโ€™ll be old enough to start reading fairy tales again.โ€

"That stuck with me so much because here I was, almost a decade later, still loving to read about magical creatures and fantasy worlds as an adult, thinking that I had lost my love of reading and imagination."

Thank you, Ms. Wardrip, for showing our students that the magic of reading and imagination never truly leaves us. Dreams of stepping through the wardrobe to wait for Mr. Beaver can still be true at any age!

Parents and Students: Have you ever taken a long break from reading and found your way back to it? What book brought you back? Let us know in the comments! ๐Ÿ‘‡

The Joy of Reading: Staff Spotlight! ๐Ÿ“š

For our Central Office receptionist Ms. Holly Rahtes, she did not enjoy reading when she was a child. It was difficult for her, and books were the last thing she wanted to pick up. That all changed in fifth grade when she entered Mrs. Reepโ€™s class.
Mrs. Reep had a reputation for being strict and old-fashioned, BUT she brought a superpower to school every day... she made reading pure fun.

"Every day, she would read a chapter aloud to the class. One book I remember most was 'James and the Giant Peach.' She didnโ€™t just read the words; she performed them. She used different voices for each character, acted out scenes, and filled the room with excitement and energy. Her storytelling would echo down the halls, drawing the attention of students from other classrooms who would quietly gather by our door just to listen."

For the first time, a student who thought they hated reading realized that books aren't just words on a page, but a gateway into another world. Because of Mrs. Reep's incredible passion, a reluctant reader discovered that reading could be an absolute blast.

This is exactly why we celebrate the Joy of Reading! Thank you to all of the Ms. Reeps in this world who go the extra mile, put on the funny voices, and turn chapters into unforgettable adventures the create a joy for reading!
Did you have a teacher who completely changed your relationship with reading? Give them a shout-out in the comments below! ๐Ÿ‘‡

The Joy of Reading: Leadership Spotlight! ๐Ÿ“š

When it comes to picking a favorite book, our Board of Education member Dr. Debbie Marsh has a beautiful, but simple, rule: "My favorite book is whichever one children want me to read to them!"

For Dr. Marsh, the magic isn't just about the story on the page, but it's about the connection made when we share those stories out loud.

Every single storytime is an opportunity to build vocabulary, spark curiosity, and foster a lifelong passion for learning. The more we read to children, the more they will love to read. We are incredibly grateful to have a Board of Education that actively champions literacy!

What is the go-to book that the children in your life always ask you to read? Share your favorite family read-alouds below! ๐Ÿ‘‡
