After recognizing his friend in the news, airman Ryland Perez-Settle assisted law enforcement in a manhunt that resulted in the capture of the fugitive.

On this day in 2006, Airman First Class Lee Bernard Chavis of the 824th Security Forces Squadron at Moody AFB, Georgia, was killed while performing duties as a turret gunner with the Iraqi police in the vicinity of Baghdad, Iraq. Chavis, who served two tours in Iraq, was remembered and honored five days later for his upbeat personality, care for fellow Airmen and positive attitude.

He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
