"WE CAN'T ALERT YOU... IF WE CAN'T REACH YOU"

East Haddam Alerts - Emergency Notification Program

The Town of East Haddam in partnership with the Chatham Health District has a state-of-the-art emergency notification system to alert citizens about emergencies and other important community news. The emergency notification system, operated in partnership with the company Everbridge, enables East Haddam Emergency Management to provide essential information quickly in a variety of situations, such as severe weather, fires, floods, unexpected road closures, or evacuation of buildings or neighborhoods.

How Emergency Alerts Work

The process begins when the Town of East Haddam issues a message about a potential safety hazard or concern. Based on the type of notification being set, messages will be sent using some or all contact methods to include voice, text and e-mail.

As part of the sign up process, you can choose which community alerts you would like to receive as well as self identify any functional needs that may require you to need assistance doing an emergency.

We highly recommend that you create an account for each member of your household with a cell phone to ensure everyone receives important alerts. We also suggest you enter a number to receive text messages, as this has proven to be the most reliable mode of communication during large scale emergencies and weather events.

On Oct. 4, 2023, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) plans a nationwide mobile alert test that will send an emergency SMS to all cellphones in the United States.

In coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the national test will be administered at approximately 2:20 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Oct. 4. It will consist of two portions that will test Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) and Emergency Alert System (EAS) capabilities.

The WEA portion of the test will be directed to all consumer cell phones. The messaging will be displayed in either English or Spanish, depending on the language settings of the phone. The EAS portion of the test will be sent to radios and televisions.

FEMA and the FCC are coordinating with EAS participants, wireless providers, emergency managers, and others to prepare for this national test to minimize confusion and to maximize the public safety value of the test.

“The purpose of the test is to ensure that the systems continue to be an effective means of warning the public about emergencies, particularly those on the national level,” the FEMA website reads. “In case the Oct. 4 test is postponed due to widespread severe weather or other significant events, the backup testing date is Oct. 11.”

The Town continues to work with Eversource to ensure all roads are clear and restoration of power occurs as quickly as possible. Eversource currently has several crews working in Town and they continue to make steady progress. At the peak of the storm yesterday, East Haddam had nearly 3500 customers out of power and currently we are down to 835 people that remain without power. Please remember you must treat all downed wires as if they are energized and remain a safe distance away. Additionally, residents are reminded if you are using a generator that it is properly ventilated. Also, please ensure you are only using indoor approved heating devices for heating your house.
