History, science, technology, engineering, and innovation came to life at Hilldale School's Fourth Grade Wax Museum! Students selected a notable figure from a STEAM field, researched their accomplishments, and transformed themselves into living exhibits. Visitors had the opportunity to "activate" each display by pressing a red floor button, prompting students to come to life and share information about the influential individual they portrayed. From inventors and mathematicians to astronauts, scientists, engineers, and environmental pioneers, students represented a wide range of trailblazers who have helped shape our world. Through research, creativity, and public speaking, our fourth graders brought these remarkable stories to life while showcasing all they learned throughout the project. Outstanding work by our Hilldale students and staff!

For 20 years, Lazar Middle School history teacher Rick Crescente has led a meaningful tradition honoring those who served our country – replacing American flags at the gravesites of local veterans dating all the way back to the Revolutionary War.

This year, more than 15 students participated in the annual field trip, learning firsthand about the sacrifices and stories connected to our own community.

MTPS Technology Specialist Jeff Bonicioli helped bring local history to life by cleaning headstones, researching Revolutionary War veterans connected to and/or buried in Montville, and sharing historical insight with students. This year proved especially meaningful, as students were able to clarify and better understand exactly where several Revolutionary War veterans are buried. Through Jeff’s investigative work, supported by technology and AI, students learned that Conrad Estler is not buried at the cemetery on Church Lane, but rather at a private residence in a nearby town. John Estler’s gravesite was also cleaned and restored, and can now be read more clearly than it has in decades.

Students also learned about Revolutionary War veteran John Blowers, who served during the war and lived to be 95 years old. In addition, they heard the story of Thomas Cornelius Doremus, whose family home – still standing today on Route 202 in Montville – hosted George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and both Continental and French troops during the Revolutionary War.

Montville Police Officer Thomas French and MTPS School Resource Officer Patrick Johnson, an Army National Guard veteran, joined the students on the field trip this year. Officer French and Detective Johnson walked the cemetery grounds replacing flags alongside the current students, as they did 20 years ago, as part of the very first class Mr. Crescente brought on this field trip, a true full-circle moment.

Adding to the significance of the day, Mrs. Michelle Trautmann, who also participated in the very first flag replacement trip, returned this year alongside her daughter, making the anniversary especially meaningful. Mrs. Nicole Rudge, who has participated in the trip for more than a decade, also joined students once again this year, continuing a long-standing commitment to preserving and sharing local history with Lazar students.

Having heard this message his whole life while growing up surrounded by veterans, Mr. Bonicioli reminded students that the military never leaves anyone behind and that we must continue to preserve the stories, sacrifices, and legacy of our veterans as the country approaches its 250th birthday – and for generations to come.
