This past Saturday’s storm was fast-moving, destructive, and required a tremendous team effort to restore some sense of normalcy to our community.

With nearly 65 emergency calls coming in within a 45-minute period, our dispatch center handled the surge quickly, efficiently, and professionally. Our officers worked tirelessly, clearing one call after another and immediately asking, “What’s next?” as calls continued to stack up by the minute.

Our DPW crews responded without hesitation, working to clear roads littered with fallen trees, branches, and debris. JCP&L was in Montville within the first hour, assessing power outages, damaged poles, and downed power lines. Our fire departments stood ready for every call that came in, including responding to a fire caused by a downed power line.

Without the dedication of these men and women, many of us would still be without power, waiting for an officer to take a report, or unable to travel roads blocked by storm debris.

The Montville Police Department would like to thank everyone who played a role in keeping order during this storm, responding to emergencies, and answering the call when their services were needed most.

A little appreciation goes a long way. Please take a moment to thank all the employees and public servants for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to our community. Their efforts do not go unnoticed. DPW and JCP&L are still working on issues resulting in Saturday's storm, almost 48 hours since the storm.

Montville residents,

Rest assured that we are well aware of the significant damage this 20-minute storm caused throughout our Township. We are in constant communication with JCP&L, the Township DPW, and utility companies. There is an order of operations that everyone should understand:

Trees involving utility lines: Power must first be disconnected before trees can be safely removed. Once power is cut, crews can clear the trees. Utility companies must then reset poles (if necessary) and replace damaged power lines.

Downed power lines without trees: Repairs are prioritized based on the number of customers affected. A circuit that restores power to 1,500 customers will generally be addressed before one that restores power to 150 customers.

Current situation: Montville was among the hardest-hit communities in Morris County and has sustained significant damage. As a result, we are receiving priority attention and additional crews from utility companies are arriving to assist with restoration efforts.

This is a tremendous undertaking involving utility companies, DPW personnel, volunteers, and police officers. Please be patient and refrain from calling police headquarters for restoration estimates, as we do not receive power restoration timelines.

While roads and power may not be restored as quickly as any of us would like, please understand that these men and women have been working nonstop since yesterday afternoon. Crews have responded to countless emergencies, including trees falling onto vehicles and homes. We are extremely grateful that no residents or emergency personnel suffered serious injuries during this storm.

Please stay away from downed power lines and damaged trees. While the photos may make for compelling social media posts, many of these lines may still be energized and can be deadly. Do not approach them under any circumstances.

If there are significant updates, we will continue to keep our residents informed through our social media or Nixle.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

Congrats to Dispatcher DaCosta on her retirement and move down south! Thank you for your dedication, your service to the town and your loyalty. Dispatchers have one of the roughest jobs within police work and it is well known the importance of great dispatchers in a police department. Best of luck, Carol!!

Today was the Memorial Day Service hosted by the Montville VFW. Amongst the many great speakers and war heroes, Montville Explorers were in attendance to help the VFW Color Guard. Thank you to all that made the service possible today and of course to all the Veterans who gave it their all. Our freedom wouldn’t be possible without our military! 🇺🇸 🙏

This Memorial Day weekend, the rain reminds us of the tears shed by the families and friends of the brave men and women who gave everything for this country.

Memorial Day is not about BBQs, trips to the shore, or having a long weekend off from school or work. It is about remembering those who fought for our freedom and never made it home.

This weekend, we honor the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice so we can live in safety and freedom. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness will never be forgotten.

As you spend time with family and friends this weekend, take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day and remember those who gave their lives for our nation.

We remember.
We honor.
We will never forget.
