Teen Services Fall Programming
by Wendy McShane
(published in the Montrose Daily Press, 9/9/26)

Fall is rapidly approaching! I hope you all are enjoying the last of the warm weather and having ample opportunities to play outside. Now that everyone is back in the swing of school, don’t forget about the many programs offered at the Montrose Regional Library including those just for teens. We have monthly book clubs and monthly programs for teens in middle and high school. We even have a Teen Advisory Board for teen volunteers. Programs occur from 4-5 p.m. in the Library Meeting Room on scheduled days.

Teen Book Club this fall starts off September 9, with the club reading “The Iliad” by Homer. Both the regular version and a graphic novel version will be discussed. Discussions are sure to be spirited and give insight into this epic novel. Teen book club members are responsible for nominating and selecting the books they will read for the club, so come and make sure your voice is heard. Future dates for the fall include; October 7 – “Absolute Batman #1,” November 4 – “The Odyssey,” and December 2 – “Howl’s Moving Castle.” Registration is required as we give free books to the first 10 registrants. Please register for this program at bit.ly/mrldteen.

Teen Programs start September 23 with a hands-on STEM opportunity sponsored by the Consumer Energy Education Foundation, CEEF. This program will have experiments designed to provide insight into the science behind energy. Come ready to put on your scientist’s coat and get your hands dirty. Future programs in the fall will be held October 28 - Fiber Arts, November 18 - Novel Writing Club, and December 16 - Fairy Tale Hour. Registration is recommended, please register for this program at bit.ly/mrldteen.

Teen Advisory Board, TAB is the volunteer organization for teens in the library. We hold monthly meetings and teens provide insight, advice, and help with volunteer opportunities in the library. This is a good way to have a voice in your library, and the time you spend counts toward volunteer requirements for high school. Monthly meetings are held from 4-5 p.m. in the Library Meeting Room. Look for the next meeting on October 1. For more information or to sign up for TAB, please contact Teen Services at [email protected] or stop by the library for an application form.

As always, there are pick up activities and games in the Teen Section of the library that can be completed any time during your library visit. Be on the lookout for science activities and Library Card Sign-Up Month in September, with a special music-themed Library Open House on September 15!

Wendy McShane is Head of Teen Services at the Montrose Regional Library.
