Today, our students worked as a collective to complete a complex engineering task, one that required them to rely on one another, navigate challenges, and figure things out together. Our focus was on what it means to strengthen the community around you: to look beyond yourself and your closest friends, notice what the group needs, and take responsibility for the kind of community you want to be part of.
At the end of the day, we asked:
What did you have to do today that you’ve learned to do better as an Outer Range student?
Our students said they had to:
• Communicate clearly and speak up when things weren’t going well.
• Listen, pay attention, and really hear other people.
• Collaborate, compromise, and work together.
• Problem solve when things didn’t go as planned.
• Stay flexible and work through hard things together.
• Be okay with failing, making mistakes, and trying again.
• Learn from mistakes instead of being discouraged by them.
• Stay curious and keep learning.
• Work toward being more efficient.
• Recognize that sometimes, even when you lose, you win because you learned something new.
These are the skills that help a group become a community, and the kind of growth we hope students carry with them far beyond Outer Range.
