This day in history--25 years ago as we honor the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, and 250 years ago today, September 11, 1776, at Mount Independence on Lake Champlain: From orderly book of Lt. Col. John Trumbull and adjutant to Major Gen. Horatio Gates: "The General is sorry he is again under the necessity of taking notice of the shameful neglect to the Public Works on Mt. Independence.
He makes great allowance for sickness, feebleness, but is yet convinced… that much more might be done for our defence than is at present attempted. The Field Officers of Col. Wingates and Col. Wymans regiments are desired to see those under their immediate command exert themselves in a spirted manner to save themselves & save their country. A short time will determine whether we are to be freemen or slaves. Let us not lose the precious moments, but, by perseverance and a manly firmness, show we are determined to conquer and be free." The Hubbardton Battle Monument will be receiving a gentle cleaning in the near future, and the historic cast iron fence will receive some TLC. This afternoon's photo is the before; we'll post an after image when the work is finished. The monument was dedicated on July 7, 1859, and is one of the older Revolutionary War battle monuments in the country. Hubbardton Battle State Historic Site, Hubbardton, VT.

The Vermont State Historic Sites say Happy Labor Day. We thank the staff, on the front lines and back to well behind the scenes, the contracted services, friends groups (official and otherwise), and the many volunteers for their work and efforts in taking care of the state historic sites.
