02/22/2025

Folks, I screwed up.

At my request, Article 12 on the Annual City Meeting ballot (the tax stabilization language) will be formally voided by the City Council at its February 26th meeting. Between my office and the printer, the crucial formatting on the printed ballots disappeared, leaving a complete head-scratching mess. If you've had trouble understanding it, you've been right on.

The fault is totally mine. I should've personally caught this, and I didn't. In fact, it took a couple members of the public to bring the problem to my attention at all. This is truly nightmare material for clerks like me. Now that it's happened, all I can do is promise to everyone that I'll step up and make sure that it never happens again.

Practically speaking, the ballots that are already in circulation and that will be voted on during Town Meeting Day remain completely valid despite the presence of the soon-to-be voided article. Article 12 simply will not have any results officially tallied, as the article itself will no longer exist, for all intents and purposes.

I am so sorry everyone. This is beyond humiliating. I'm just glad it wasn't worse.

John

I want to personally thank everyone for the amazing help and support I and those in my household have received. After my house was impacted by the flood, the prospect of cleanup was daunting at best, but the outpouring of volunteer support - from Montpelier and elsewhere - made it possible for my family to get through it with good spirits, and freed us up to better help our neighbors and pitch in with cleanup at the businesses downtown.

And similarly, the support I and others at the city have received in trying to put the pieces back together at City Hall has been overwhelming and humbling, and appreciated beyond words.

We are going into the hard slog now. Everybody is going to be working very hard, and we should always bear in mind the importance of supporting each other and keeping up our collective and individual spirits. The hard work can't get done if we aren't working as a team and that means leaning on others when we need to, and letting others lean on us when they need to.

Vermont & Montpelier Strong!

07/11/2023

Hang in there everybody. Water recedes, broken things get fixed, and normalcy eventually returns. Just be good to each other and help your neighbors as much as you can. We get through this as a community/team.
