UPDATE: 6:32 PM: State Street is now OPEN and water service has been restored to all affected customers. Thank you to everyone for your patience and understanding while crews completed these emergency repairs.

State Street / Route 2 in Montpelier Closed - Sept. 12, 4:00 PM

Lower State Street / Route 2 is currently closed to traffic due to a large tree and live power lines down across the roadway between Bailey Avenue and Graves Street / Lague Drive. The Montpelier Fire Department is on scene, and Green Mountain Power is responding. Due to the size of the tree and the involvement of live electrical lines, this closure is expected to be lengthy. Motorists should avoid the area and seek an alternate route. Reopen time is not known at this time.

Public Works is also anticipating a water shutdown, when safe to do so, to repair damaged water lines at the scene. We will update as more info becomes available.

Key Responsibilities:
Crew & Project Leading: Direct daily park maintenance, trail building, and facility upkeep.
Program Coordination: Oversee the Montpelier Youth Conservation Corps (MYCC), community events (Enchanted Forest, Ice on Fire, Parkapalooza), and Feast Farm operations.
Development & Engagement: Coordinate volunteers, support grant writing, and manage community outreach.
Field & Support Work: Engage in year-round outdoor work, tree care operations, and emergency response.

Qualifications & Schedule:
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM (with occasional seasonal weekend/evenings and a 1-in-4 weekend on-call rotation).
Requirements: Ability to perform sustained physical outdoor work in all weather, strong collaboration and communication skills, and capacity to mentor youth and volunteers. Trade, trail building, or tree care experience is a plus.

Pay & Benefits:
Wage: $29.40 – $30.89 per hour (Level 6 Project Manager), dependent on experience, with annual step and cost-of-living increases.
Benefits: Robust package including health/dental coverage, flexible spending, a retirement plan (8% employer match), and generous paid time off.

The Assistant City Manager serves as a trusted strategic partner to the City Manager and a core member of the city's leadership team. This position provides operational oversight, drives cross-departmental initiatives, supports the Montpelier City Plan and City Council's Strategic Plan, and steps in as Acting City Manager during the Manager's absence. The role also leads public engagement, guides policy development, stewards financial resources, and champions a workplace culture of excellence and accountability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in public administration, policy, business, or related field
7+ years in government, public management, or financial administration (equivalency considered)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree in a related field
Extensive municipal government experience; Vermont knowledge a strong plus
Thorough knowledge of the principles of municipal government administration
Demonstrated ability to handle confidential records, bid proposals, and negotiating positions
Proven success leading diverse teams, managing budgets, and implementing policy matters of significance

Road OPEN! Berlin Street is officially open!
Thank you for your patience and cooperation throughout the Berlin Street sewer replacement project. Department of Public Works- City of Montpelier and City edge Construction Crews have wrapped up the final paving and cleanup, and normal traffic flow has resumed.

Mayor Gwinn (center) joined DPW Deputy Director Zach Blodgett (left) and DPW Engineer Peter Arts (right) today for a ribbon-cutting celebration to celebrate the completion of this project.
