The Montpelier Weekly asked 3 questions to each candidate. Here are the questions and my responses:

Why are you running?

I want to be Sheriff because helping people is what I enjoy doing. As the Sheriff you are the sole responsible person to see that each citizen of the county gets the same attention and respect across the board. The Sheriff needs to be out and about talking to everyone so that he sees what going on around the county along with people recognizing who he is and knowing that he wants what they want. The Sheriff should also encourage his deputies to do the same.

What is your educational background and experience for the position?

Vincennes University (Associates Degree in Law Enforcement)
Indiana Law Enforcement Academy Graduate
Indiana Chief of Police Training
Southern Police Institute (Managing Rural Police Departments)
Indiana Chiefs of Police Association (Police Executive Leadership Academy)
Indiana Sheriff’s Association (Elected Sheriff’s Training)
National Sheriff’s Institute Graduate

Montpelier Police Reserve 6 month
Montpelier Police Officer 3 yrs
Montpelier Police Chief 9 yrs
Blackford County Sheriff 9.5 yrs
Blackford County Commissioner 6 yrs

With over 22 years of Law Enforcement experience and a total of 28 years in public service to the citizens of Blackford County I believe I am the best candidate for Blackford County Sheriff.

What will your goals in office be, and/or how would you change the way the position is handled now?

More training. We are required to have a minimum number of hours on specific topics. I would add additional training on such things as Mental Illness, De-escalating skills and things that make the safety of the employees and the folks of Blackford County Better.
Be more involved with the community: Bring programs back that get the Sheriff’s Office and the Community together ie: Summer Camp, Project Lifesaver, Senior Citizen (TRIAD) Activities, Do quarterly community events in each community. By just a meet and greet, or educational seminar about what’s happening in the county or a specific topic.
We as Elected Officials and employees need to be active in all our communities of the County.
The working relationships of all Public Safety in Blackford County should be a priority.
My Door is always open and my phone number is 765-348-8500

We are happy to announce the Keynote Speaker for our Lincoln Day Dinner this year will be US Congressman Jim Banks. Harrison Township has been in Congressman Bank's 3rd Congressional District for awhile. With redistricting now all of Blackford County is in the 3rd District.

Congressman Jim Banks is a native Hoosier, born and raised in Columbia City. He earned an undergraduate degree from Indiana University and a Master of Business Administration from Grace College. While serving in the Indiana State Senate from 2010 to 2016, he chaired the Senate Veteran Affairs and the Military Committee where he led the charge on many significant pro-growth, pro-family, and pro-veteran reforms.

In addition to his service in the State Senate, Congressman Banks is also a past president of the Columbia City Rotary Club, former chairman of the Whitley County Republican Party, and has served on the Whitley County Council and Northeast Indiana Workforce Development Board.

Congressman Banks currently serves in the U.S. Navy Reserve as a Supply Corps officer. In 2014 and 2015, he took a leave of absence from the Indiana State Senate to deploy to Afghanistan during Operations Enduring Freedom and Freedom’s Sentinel. Due to a unique state law regarding leaves of absence, his wife, Amanda, was elected to serve in his place during the deployment. Banks is often told she made a better State Senator than he did.

Banks was elected in 2016 to represent Indiana’s 3rd Congressional District and currently serves as chairman of the Republican Study Committee for the 117th Congress. Banks serves as a member of the House Committee on Armed Services, the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, and the House Committee on Education and Labor. Additionally, he serves as the Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Subcommittee Cyber, Innovative Technologies, and Information Systems, co-chairs the House Armed Services Committee’s Future of Defense Task Force and sits on the Naval Academy’s Board of Visitors.

Amid Congressman Banks’ work as a public servant, he has been recognized for outstanding service and leadership. In 2018 and 2019, Congressman Banks received the Family Research Council’s “True Blue” award for his 100% pro-life, pro-family voting record. He has also received NFIB’s “Guardian of Small Business” award and the Freedom Fighter Award from FreedomWorks in recognition of his dedication to economic freedom and personal liberty.
