Join us at Caspari for a cocktail party celebrating the unveiling of the 2026 Montpelier Races painting by local artist Kelly Coffin.

Kelly Coffin is a local artist and equestrian. Her poster painting will be auctioned off on Race Day. Proceeds will benefit the Montpelier Steeplechase and Equestrian Foundation, which supports James Madison's Montpelier.

At Montpelier, several toothbrush fragments have been recovered from archaeological excavations!

For example, the fragments of two bone toothbrushes in the collection were found in the Field Quarter excavations at homes of the enslaved; these bone toothbrushes were made with rows of tiny drilled holes to hold the bristles, which were often made from an organic material like boar or horse hair and rarely survive in the archaeological record.

Finding these artifacts at homesites of the enslaved can suggest that the people who lived there had an interest in the new and evolving practices of an increasingly interconnected market of goods, and had some kind of economic choice in their personal hygiene practices.

We are counting down the days until FALL!

Go on a walk through James Madison’s beloved woodlands and contemplate our connections to Madison’s era through our mutual dependence on this important natural resource. Learn about the ecological and economic contributions a well-managed forest provides to our society in terms of habitat, wildlife, wood products, and such basic needs as clean air and water. Investigate how various techniques of active forest management constitute stewardship of the woodlands, to renew and preserve them for future generations.

Today is Read a Book Day!

With over 4,000 volumes in his library, James Madison had plenty of reading
material to choose from. In 1833, the 82-year-old retired President wrote that he and his wife Dolley still enjoyed reading together, despite their eye troubles:

"Altho' the state of my eyes permit me to read but little, and... Mrs Madison's eyes being in the same state with mine, we found it convenient to read in a sort of partnership..."

Join us for a day-long educational experience September 19th in which you will work side-by-side with heritage blacksmiths, carpenters, leatherworkers, and framers to learn the trades and skills employed by the Montpelier enslaved community. This program is based on extensive documentary and archaeological research into the expertise of skilled Black artisans at Montpelier. Note with registering for the program, you will take part in zoom-based trainings for the days leading up to September 19th. These safety trainings will allow you to take part in the hands-on activities on September 19th.

The September 19th trade festival will be held at Montpelier on Constitution Day, and you will be part of the team as we demonstrate the range of trade expertise of the enslaved at Montpelier to visitors at this all-day trade festival.

Marion duPont Scott, the last private owner of Montpelier, died at home on this day in 1983, at the age of 89.

A newspaper obituary described her as “a well-known horse breeder and philanthropist,” noting that she was the great-granddaughter of the founder of the DuPont chemical company, Eluthere Irenee duPont. In her will, Mrs. Scott expressed a desire that her heirs would transfer Montpelier to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, so that it could be restored and furnished to the time period of James

[Yes, there are 3 different spellings of duPont/DuPont/du Pont in this one post! Marion spelled her name with a small d, and the chemical company spells it with a capital D, and neither one has a space between D/du and Pont. But Eluthere did put a space between his “du” and his “Pont.”]
