Well the first Floridians First Americans is over again and a great success. I was down right scared about trying to have evening speakers, but found I was silly. The opera house was more crowded in the evening than during the day. We even had a capacity crowd Friday evening with pouring down rain. We are putting the Bob Copper poster for sale on the Main Street Monticello Florida web site. Great week! Anne

The First Floridians First Americans Conference has 250 people pre-registered! Have you ever seen the Opera House crowded? I can hardly wait to tell the first person, "i'm so sorry, we can't seat any more people." That could actually happen -- today and tomorrow we will be packing tote bags, hanging pictures, bringing in museum cases to hold artifacts and doing all those things that make an event run smoothly. We have volunteers from all over town - just about every group is represented. The Chamber is helping, the Altrusa, Women's Club, Rotary etc., even the Rotary in Tallahassee is helping. We still need ushers for Thurs, Friday and Sat. afternoons. I hope the majority of the people attending are from Jefferson County.

"If you can imagine a place where crystal clear waters boiled up from the depths of the earth through deep chasms as giant prehistoric mammals roamed the landscape retreating from early hunters in excess of 12,000 years ago then this conference is for you." Conference presented by Main Street Monticello Florida
October 1, 2, 3, 2015 – Monticello Opera House

Presentations will tell the story of Florida's people before the Spanish came. Archaeologists, paleontologists, anthropologists, other scholars, many who worked on digs in this county, will explain what the pre-Clovis discoveries in this area mean to scholars throughout the Western Hemisphere and people who live close to the sites.

Dr. Mike Waters of the Center for the First Americans at Texas A & M University will explain the controversy among scholars created by discoveries made in the Aucilla Basin. He will tell of past local discoveries such as the mammoth tusk scholars contend is the earliest proven large animal kill in North America, and two artifacts certified to be more than 14,000 years old. Michael Collins, Lee Newsome, S. David Webb and others of equal stature will speak.

Speakers agree to design their remarks to make them understandable and interesting to laymen. Papers will be edited for publication post-conference and presentations will be recorded on CD – slide presentations will be posted on the First Floridians web site. We will present an extensive display of artifacts, with informational docents, open to viewing by the public to help explain the story of the First Floridians: First Americans.

This project will give scholars new information and lay attendees an understanding of the importance of protecting the archaeological, anthropological and early historic sites in our county.

Our target audience is, residents and students of Monticello, Jefferson, Madison, Taylor, Leon & surrounding counties and scholars throughout North America. We will use newspapers and other print media, radio, television, Internet Media releases, posting on related web sites and social media to market this conference.

Michael Waters, Jim Dunbar, Lee Newsom, are scholars confirmed. Dennis Stanford of the Smithsonian and others have been invited. David Ward, Ed. Green, and Jack Carswell will conduct educational field trips to several archaeological sites.

Presentations and artifacts will be filmed and edited for CD. One copy will be provided free to Florida Libraries who request it. Copies of slide presentations will be posted on www.firstfloridiansconference.com and available to the public.

Attendance will be taken through site registration. Evaluations will be distributed to attendees and collected after each presentation and another will be e-mailed and collected after the conference.

The Sharing Water Conference was a great success. I am now learning how to work with panels on Adobe so I can put the power point presentations of those experts on the web site (www.sharingwaterconference.com). I gave up on the special adobe stuff and am putting them up as is. It will take a few more days to complete then anyone can learn about the huge Floridan Aquifer from experts from three states.

Sharing Water: The Floridan Aquifer
in Alabama, Georgia and Florida

Thursday – Saturday, 10/2/2014 – 10/4/2014
Monticello Opera House – 185 Courthouse Cr. Monticello, FL 32344

SHARING WATER is one in a series of annual conferences held in Monticello, addressing critical contemporary issues and offered free to the public. Speakers will address the question of water supply for the growing world population, using the Floridan Aquifer as an example. This issue is especially appropriate for its location in the Big Bend area of Florida, surrounded by wetlands, numerous springs and pristine rivers. In the words of a recent USFWS publication, “This region is primarily defined by water: surface water, ground water, and rivers that transition into estuaries and eventually the salt waters of the Gulf of Mexico.”
