Cowboys, Native American tribes, and outlaws were the fi
rst to inhabit the beautiful mountains and canyons of Monticello. Settled in 1887 by Mormon settlers, the town was later named Monticello in honor of Thomas Jefferson's estate. There was much turmoil with ongoing disputes between the settlers, the cowboys, and the Native Americans. Peace was finally enforced between the groups by a contingent of soldiers. Later, miners came in search of riches. A gold and silver rush in the nearby Gold Queen Basin kept excitement high, but results were poor. Monticello received its mining boom in the 1950's when uranium ore was discovered, and a uranium processing plant was constructed. Today, golf has replaced uranium processing. Peaceful residents of Monticello have replaced the fighting settlers, cowboys, and Native Americans. A rush of hometown pride has replaced the gold and silver. The future stands firm because of the history that was made (and is still being made) in the small town of Monticello, Utah.
