Sullivan County’s planners seek everyone’s input on an update to the Hazard Mitigation Plan.

In cooperation with New York State’s Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES), the County is in the midst of updating its hazard response plan so that local communities together can identify risks, evaluate vulnerabilities and develop strategies to reduce those risks.

“It’s crucial that we get feedback from local residents and businesspeople,” notes Project Manager and County Planner Justin Rocque. “This plan is designed to reduce the impact of catastrophes, when they occur, and will permit the County to access crucial federal and State funds that can offset the economic impacts that follow these disasters.”

Following review by the State, local towns and villages will be asked to formally adopt the Plan, so that everyone is on the same page when responding to hazards.

“We are asking all the residents of Sullivan County to review the final draft of the plan and give feedback,” adds Planning Commissioner Heather Brown. “The projects and information included in the Plan will allow your communities to remain eligible for grant funding opportunities to minimize losses from natural disasters. The Public Review Period is open only until June 6, 2026, so don’t miss this last chance to have your voice heard! Your support and responses are appreciated!”

*** DATE CHANGED TO MAY 19 ***
Due to the forecast, the closure the Callicoon Bridge is now scheduled for Tuesday, May 19, 2026, starting at approximately 10 a.m. with tentative backup dates of May 27th or May 28th.

The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) is advising motorists of a full closure of the Callicoon Bridge (Interstate Bridge #7) which spans the Delaware River between Bridge Street in the hamlet of Callicoon, Sullivan County, and State Route 1016 in Damascus Township, Pennsylvania.

The temporary closure is needed to pour concrete on two newly constructed bridge spans as part of a $17.8 million project that is scheduled for completion in November 2027. The bridge is expected to reopen within 24 hours after the work is finished. Pedestrian and bicycle access will remain open during the closure.

Motorists, including commercial and freight traffic, should follow detours and messaging displayed on NYSDOT variable message signs. The work is not expected to impact Memorial Day weekend travel.
