Did you miss the City Council meeting last week? Here are the highlights:

🌳Parks, Arts & Recreation staff secured two grants to help fund removal of trees killed by EAB on public and private land. One grant is designated for neighborhoods with high environmental and social vulnerability, and another is a first-come, first served grant for residents removing trees on their private property. The grant will help reduce the large financial need for removing ash trees and help preserve Monticello’s urban canopy with a 1:1 replacement program.

📚Construction on the Monticello Library parking lot is scheduled to begin Thursday, June 18. One half of the parking lot will remain open at all times, reducing the impact on users. The project will include repairs and ADA accessibility upgrades.

🔨 Council authorized HCM Architects and Encompass, Inc. to determine the scale and price of repairs needed for the MCC. The project will entail repairs to the central hall, upper wall window systems and northweat facing windows of the indoor track. Construction will be completed in phases to minimize disruptions to MCC operations.

Behind every successful election is a team of dedicated election judges. Election judges are essential to our democracy, helping ensure elections are conducted fairly, securely and accurately. Their work ensures polling places run smoothly and that every eligible voter has the opportunity to cast a ballot.

The City of Monticello is currently looking for election judges for the 2026 election season. The 2026 State Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, August 11. The primary election narrows the field of state and national candidates. You must vote within one political party for your vote to be counted during the primary.

The 2026 General Election will take place on Tuesday, November 3. This election includes voting for Mayor and Council candidates, as well as county, state and federal offices.

If you are interested in serving as an election judge, contact Jennifer Schreiber, City Clerk, at 763-271-3204.

Did you miss the City Council meeting last week? Here are the highlights:

🚰 Council approved a contract for Rice Lake Construction Group to act as the Construction Manager at Risk for the construction of the new Water Treatment Plant. The contract between the City and Rice Lake Construction Group guarantees that Rice Lake Construction Group will cover any potential gaps between the price agreed upon for construction and the final cost of the project. This decision is the last action needed from Council before construction can begin on the facility. The new plant is being built to reduce levels of manganese found in Monticello’s water.

⭐ Staff were presented with the Conservation Minnesota’s 2026 Blazing Star Award and the Minnesota Recreation & Park Association Award of Excellence for the reinvestment into West Bridge Park. The project was specifically commended for its blend of environmental protection and accessible features.

🏦 The Finance Department presented the annual Financial Report detailing 2026 initiatives and progress. The City of Monticello also received a “clean” Annual Comprehensive Financial Report, meaning that no discrepancies or concerns were found in the City’s use of public funds.

Congratulations to staff who were recognized this week for their outstanding work on the West Bridge Park playground!

During the May 26 City Council meeting, Conservation Minnesota awarded the City the 2026 Blazing Star Award, and the Minnesota Recreation & Park Association presented the City with the Award of Excellence.

The playground is ADA accessible, has features for many age ranges, houses a rain garden and native plants and has permeable pavement which helps restore water tables and reduce flooding while filtering pollutants. The park protects the local environment, specifically the Mississippi River, while creating opportunities for people to enjoy the outdoors no matter their age or abilities. 🛝🌍
