As you may already know, Piatt County experienced significant severe weather today, and we are working to assess the overall impact across the County.

If your home, business, farm, or other property sustained damage, please take a few minutes to complete the IEMA-OHS Storm Damage Self-Assessment Survey using the QR code below.

Your report helps us:

✅ Identify areas most affected by the storm
✅ Support local and state damage assessment efforts
✅ Document the overall impact to Piatt County
✅ Determine whether additional recovery resources may be available

Please report damage even if it seems minor. Every report helps us build a more complete picture of the storm’s impact.

If possible, include photos of the damage when completing the survey.

We’d also appreciate residents sharing storm photos in the comments below to help us document impacts across the county.

The tornado threat is increasing across central Illinois. Storms are increasing in number and strength and may pose a significant tornado threat into the early evening hours in areas near and south of I-72.

[Midday update 6/17 at 12:35pm] - Piatt County is still at an enhanced (level 3 of 5) to Moderate (level 4 of 5) risk of severe storms for this region this afternoon and for this evening.

Several of you have asked about a public storm shelter. Today, if you do not have access to a safe shelter, the community building is now open as a public storm shelter here in Monticello, IL.

Location: 201 N Sate St. Monticello, IL 61856
(North West of building, please access through the Monticello Township doors and head downstairs. Signs will be posted).

The shelter is backed by a generator and would be a great location to charge any devices as well.

Again, we are expected to have two waves of storms today. Stay weather aware, have multiple ways to receive warnings, know your sheltering plan before storms arrive, and act quickly when warnings are issued.

Severe weather is projected for tomorrow. I know everyone is tired of hearing that but now is the time to prepare!

Have multiple ways to receive warnings, including Hyper-Reach, NOAA Weather Radio, Wireless Emergency Alerts, and local media.

Outdoor warning sirens are meant to alert those outdoors and should not be your only way to receive warnings. If a Tornado Warning is issued, take shelter immediately in the lowest level of a sturdy building, away from windows.

Charge your phones, secure outdoor items, and review your family’s emergency plan.

Stay weather aware. We will continue monitoring conditions and provide updates as needed.

UPDATE: The U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) has upgraded the risk for severe weather for tomorrow (Wednesday) to "moderate" (level 4 of 5) for central Illinois.

Possibilities include damaging winds with gusts up to 60-75 mph, large hail, scattered tornadoes, and flash flooding.

We know you're tired of storms. But we have to be prepared.

Severe storms are possible again across central and southeast Illinois Saturday. Damaging wind gusts to around 60 mph is the primary hazard, but isolated large hail over an inch will be possible possible. Stay weather aware and ensure you have multiple ways to receive warnings.
