Last evening, the Montgomery Township Board of Supervisors approved funding to hire 11 additional firefighters after both volunteer and career leadership within the Fire Department voiced serious concerns regarding the declining number of volunteers and increased response times. This was a critical step to ensure our Township has the emergency coverage it needs and the residents deserve.
Hiring an additional 11 firefighters is the minimum to ensure that there are always four, qualified, interior firefighters on the fire truck 24/7/365 in Montgomery Township. Having four qualified firefighters on a truck isn’t a luxury. It is the standard for safe operations.
Unfortunately, members of the incoming Board have publicly stated that they intend to cut that funding in the new year. Their plan is to re-open the budget to stop these critical staffing improvements until a comprehensive fire study is completed. This decision will delay the hiring of much-needed firefighters and leave Montgomery Township with significant gaps in coverage.
Public safety is not optional, it’s a responsibility. Cutting firefighter funding means slower response times, greater risk to families, homes, and businesses, and a heavier burden on our already stretched volunteers.
Our community deserves reliable fire protection. Stand with our firefighters and demand that the new Board keep the funding in place. Attend the meeting in January, contact your supervisors, and advocate for public safety. Show up, speak out, and make it clear: public safety is non-negotiable.
